Goodbye Capaldi Scheduling

It’s been difficult putting this schedule together, as I’m not entirely sure I’m ready to say goodbye to P-Cap (and the BBC continues to fiddle with episode titles depending on what site you visit). At any rate, for those of you that like to follow along at home, or want to take advantage of your new BritBox subscription and join us for our weekly Doctor Who watch/tweet along Friday Night Who, here’s the line up:

TONIGHT, (4/14) Friday Night Who offering is Tom Baker in “Destiny Of The Daleks”. This is notable for also being the first (and so far only) appearance of the Movellans, who are supposed to reappear in this weekend’s season opener.

TTV #326 We’ll take a look at “The Pilot” (10×1) and give you our thoughts. NuWho is back, baby!

Because we like paring things up when the show comes back, FNW on 4/21 features Matt Smith in “The Girl Who Waited”, because handbots are really close to those emoji bots, right?

TTV #327 Details of the emoji bots in our look at “Smile” (10×2)

Celebrating both Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) and John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) at this years Planet Comicon in KC, our offering this week (FNW 4/28) is “The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances” with Christopher Eccelston.

Side Trip 27 will bring you all the ins and outs of our local big con, Planet Comicon 2017.

And TTV #328 (our proper show for the week) will have our thoughts on “Thin Ice” (10×3)

Okay, this is totally cheesy and NOT the way to schedule, but FNW 5/5 is “End Of Time / End Of Time Part 2” with David Tennant…

…because this week’s NuWho episode is called “Knock, Knock” (10×4). GET IT?!? Yeah, probably no more tie in than that for TTV #329.

5/12 is surprisingly, one we’ve never officially done for Friday Night Who before, Jon Pertwee’s “Terror Of The Autons”

TTV #330 will have our thoughts on “Oxygen” (10×5)

FNW 5/19 is the last appearance of Missy from Peter Capaldi’s last series, “The Magician’s Apprentice / The Witches Familiar”

…because we have it on pretty good authority she returns this season. Will it be in “Extremis” (10×6), discussed in TTV #331?

FNW 5/26 is the Tom Baker classic “Pyramids Of Mars”

TTV #332 has our thoughts on “The Pyramid At The End Of The World” (10×7).

Join us and Frazer Hines at Britishfest in Omaha this weekend. We’ll be watching “The Seeds Of Death” Part 1-3 with Patrick Troughton

Side Trip 28 has all the fun to be had from Britishfest 2017

TTV #333 – The Lie Of The Land (OR) The Truth (10×8)

FNW 6/9 will finish off “The Seeds Of Death” with Parts 4-6

as the Ice Warriors reappear in TTV #334 as we discuss “The Empress Of Mars” (OR) “The Martian Queen” (10×9)

Mura Rono is back this season, having previously written this week’s FNW 6/16 “Survival” starring Sylvester McCoy.

and is the only author to write for both classic and NuWho with TTV #335’s discussion topic, “Eaters Of Light” (10×10)

The complete televised history of the Mondasian Cybermen unfolds the next two weeks, as FNW on 6/23 is “Attack Of The Cybermen” featuring Colin Baker.

TTV #336 has the new Mondasian Cybermen in “World Enough And Time” (OR) “The Converted” (10×11)

and finally, FNW 6/30 brings us “The Tenth Planet” the last episode of William Hartnell.

Will TTV #337 have us discussing the last episode of Peter Capaldi? “The Doctor Falls” (OR) “Steel Skinned” (10×12) will tell.

Beyond that?

Depression.

Deep. Dark. Depression.

The Curse Of Scheduling The Power Of The Daleks

So once again we have been foiled by an uncertain time frame. In our desire to get Power Of The Daleks on the schedule (and Friday Night Who) as close to air date as possible, we have been stymied by BBC America and BBC Worldwide’s decision to release the six part serial WEEKLY. Which threw a major monkey-wrench into our plans. So, with much apology, I present a REVISED schedule for those of you that like following along…

Friday Night Who TONIGHT 11/25 will star David Tennant in The Doctor’s Daughter

TTV #306 will have our reviews of Big Finish The 4th Doctor Adventures S2: #4 The Justice Of Jalxar, AND the first two episodes of The Power Of The Daleks.

FNW 12/2 is Web Of Fear Parts 1-3

For Traveling The Vortex #307 we’ll discuss Power Of The Daleks episode #3, and bring you some Book Reviews with the Candy Jar shorts The Creatures in the Cave by Rick Cross, The Last Duty by Christopher Bryant, Eve of the Fomorians by Robert Mammome, and The Lost Skin: Episode 1 by Andy Frankham-Allen

FNW 12/9 is Web Of Fear Parts 4-6

TTV #308 covers Power Of The Daleks #4, and a Book Review, Lethbridge-Stewart: Times Squared by Rick Cross

Tom Baker returns to FNW on 12/16 for Revenge Of The Cybermen

Which allows us to take a look at both the 4th Doctor Mini-Series, AND Supremacy Of The Cybermen Mini-Series from Titan Comics, as well as Power Of The Daleks episode #5 in TTV #309.

Our holiday edition of FNW 12/23 is last year’s The Husbands Of River Song

and coming fresh of the airing, TTV #310 will have our thoughts on Power Of The Daleks #6, and the 2016 Christmas special The Return Of Doctor Mysterio

FNW 12/30 is Jon Pertwee in The Time Monster Parts 1-3

TTV #311 will be A Very Vortex Christmas Special. Not sure what we’re looking at yet, but Glenn is digging up some goodies!

Leading off the shiny new year is a bit of left over business from last, as we finish The Time Monster Part 4-6 for Friday Night Who on 1/6

Beyond that I’ll keep things a little closer to the vest to make sure they pan out as anticipated. But be ready for more comics, big finish and Zygons as we run up to Season 10…

Update! The Return Of Schedule Mysterio!

Hey gang, as we discussed on the podcast this week, there has been a slight shift in the programming, since Power of the Daleks wont actually release in time for Friday Night Who, this week we’ve shuffled some things around. The updated (and expanded! NOW THROUGH 2017) schedule follows, for those of you who like to follow things.

Okay, since Power isn’t going to be ready yet, we stepped up the Tom Baker episode Meglos for Friday Night Who on 11/18

Episode #305 of Traveling The Vortex is our discussion of Meglos

THEN we finally get Power on for FNW. It’s a six parter, so we’re breaking it in two. The Power of the Daleks Part 1-3 11/25

In TTV #306 we’ll take a look at the Titan Comics 4th Doctor Mini-Series, and Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures S2: #4 The Justice Of Jalxar

FNW 12/2 finishes up the animated The Power of the Daleks Part 4-6

Get Lost in Time for episode #307 as we break down The Power of the Daleks with the Novel and Animated recon

FNW 12/9 gives us a double helping of Patrick Troughton as we go back to Web Of Fear Part 1-3

BOOK REVIEWS! TTV #308 will be a grab bag of Candy Jar shorts, ranging from Havoc files 1 up to the most current release. The Creatures in the Cave by Rick Cross, The Last Duty by Christopher Bryant, Eve of the Fomorians by Robert Mammome, and The Lost Skin: Episode 1 by Andy Frankham-Allen. We’ll also take a look at the last couple of Goodreads book club books.

FNW 12/16 finishes off Web Of Fear with Parts 4-6

TTV #309 is another Candy Jar Book Review, this time we’re looking at Lethbridge-Stewart: Times Squared by Rick Cross

Christmas Time is here again! What better way to gear up than with Capaldi’s last Christmas offering, The Husbands Of River Song for Friday Night Who on 12/23.

Post Christmas cuddles happen in TTV #310 with our review of The Return Of Doctor Mysterio!

New Years hits us with some more Pertwee action, as we hit up The Time Monster Parts 1-3

TTV #311 sees us go back to Titan Comics for 12th Doctor #2.1 – #2.5, and Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures: S2 #5 Phantoms Of The Deep

2017

FNW 1/6 finishes The Time Monster Part 4-6

Just in time for TTV #312, a Book Review on Candy Jar’s Lethbridge-Stewart: The Blood Of Atlantis by Simon A Forward and accompanying short.

Sylv returns to Friday Night Who on 1/13 in Dragonfire

and another comic/audio paring in Traveling The Vortex #313 with Titan Comics 12th Doctor #2.6 – #2.10 and Big Finish #74 LIVE 34

Obviously, take these with a grain of salt since they can (and have) changed at a moments notice, but we’ll try and keep you informed. Thanks as always for continuing to hang out with us week after week, we’ll see you in the vortex!

Color Version! And Where To Watch Power Of The Daleks

DoctorWho.tv have a breakdown reporting on all the ways and wheres to watch who. Specifically, the newly animated Power Of The Daleks. You can find the full details here, but for those of us in the US, the breakdown looks like this:

MONDAY, NOV 14, 2016 – Select theaters nationwide, one night only. Visit www.fathomevents.com for more info.

SATURDAY, NOV 19, 2016 – Airing weekly on BBC America.

End of November – BBC America will make the COLOR version available exclusively on their digital platforms.

TUESDAY, JAN 24, 2017 – DVD releases as a Barnes & Noble exclusive, including the COLOR version.

The UK is also getting a special edition Bluray.

Now as a purist, I want black and white Doctor Who episodes to be black and white. BUT I also think this is a golden opportunity to do something cool and unique. Since these episodes are being recreated via animation, I have no issues with a color version being made available as well as the black and white. Personally, I think this episode looks gorgeous, and cant wait to see it in full!

Post Party Schedule Hangover

Time Eddy II weekend is upon us! So here’s an update on things to come.

What better way to celebrate the fifth Doctor Peter Davison’s appearance at Time Eddy than to watch “The Five Doctors” for our Friday Night Who selection that weekend on 10-14?

Well, actually, there is a better way to celebrate his appearance at Time Eddy II.  With a Stuffed-to-the-gills celebration of our 300 episode recounting our con adventures and MANY surprises.

Friday Night Who on 10/21 is “The Caretaker” with Peter Capaldi

TTV #301 is a Companion Archive, with a twist. We’ll be discussing Coal Hill School! Talking the Class premiere, and reviewing the comic The Monsters Of Coal Hill, and the short story Nothing at the End of the Lane.

Did you know this October marks the 50th Anniversary of the Cybermen? Well it does. So our Halloween offering this year for FNW on 10/28 is their first appearance, “The Tenth Planet” with first Doctor William Hartnell

TTV #302 – Silver & Gold: The Cybermen Turn 50. Look for plenty of squee from Keith AND Adversary Archive: The Cybermen IV! We’ll take a look at Big Finish mainline stories #86 “The Reaping” and #87 “The Gathering”.

FNW 11/4 – “Inferno” Parts 1-4 finishes off a year of Liz Shaw for us. (Did you notice all our third doctor FNW selections this year featured Liz? Neither did we. But once we did notice, we had to include her swan song.)

And since we’e on the subject of Liz Shaw, how about a Companion Archive? We’ll talk about her career and review Big Finish Companion Chronicle Season 1 #3, “The Blue Tooth”.

We’ll finish off “Inferno” with Parts 5-7 on 11/11 for FNW.

Which should set us up nicely for episode #304 where we’ll take a look at the Candy Jar short stories featured in The Havoc Files 2.

FINALLY! AFTER MONTHS OF SPECULATION, IT IS OUT, AVAILABLE AND WILL BE WATCHED! FNW 11/18 is the newly animated “The Power of the Daleks” Part 1-3!

A brief interlude to the fourth Doctor’s era in TTV #305 we’ll review the just concluded Titan Comics 4th Doctor Mini-Series, and Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures season 2 #4 “The Justice Of Jalxar”.

FNW 11/25 will finish “The Power of the Daleks” with Parts 4-6.

TTV #306 will have our thoughts on this Lost in Time adventure “The Power of the Daleks” with looks at both the animated recon and the Novel. (Though not really Lost any more, but we’ll talk more about that on the cast!)

Friday Night Who on 12/2 is Tom Baker in “Meglos”.

And we’ll discuss the story “Meglos” in TTV #307.

Beyond that? One Word…

CHRISTMAS!

The “Wait, we’ve been doing this for HOW LONG?” Schedule

It was with a mixture of shocked surprise and gratitude that when compiling the next pieces of the schedule we realized we were coming up on the big 300th episode here at Traveling The Vortex. As always, we remain hopefully humble and slightly bemused that people are still listening, and seem to like what we’re doing, so again, we thank you! Keeping in that spirit, we wanted to do something a little special for the “epiversary” (even if it meant bending the rules just a little bit). So lets dive into the upcoming madness…

Our weekly Doctor Who watch party Friday Night Who continues on 8/19 with the David Tennant episode “Gridlock”. A reminder everyone is welcome to join in on Twitter, look for the #FridayNightWho hashtags, we push play at midnight.

Episode #295 of the podcast is both An Adversary Archive on The Macra, AND a Lost In Time discussion of The Macra Terror, which sadly no longer exists. We’ll be revieiwng the telesnap recon and the novelization of this Patrick Troughton story.

FNW 8/26 is “Heaven Sent” staring Peter Capaldi.

Which should set us up nicely for our final Beyond The Doctor discussion of the year, We’ll talk Peter Capalid and his performance In The Loop for TTV #296.

A change in what was scheduled before, as FNW on 9/2 is now “The Silurians” (Or Doctor Who and the Silurians, if we must.) This is a long one, so we’ll split it up and do the first four parts this week.

No show this week, but we don’t want to leave you high and dry, so instead we’ll bring you some fun courtesy of Candy Jar Books and Lethbridge-Stewart: The Showstoppers author Jonathan Cooper.

FNW 9/9 finishes off “The Silurians” with parts 5-7.

TTV #297 is a Book Review, we’ll give our thoughts on Candy Jar Book’s Lethbridge-Stewart: The Grandfather Infestation by John Peel and the next short story The Playing Dead by Adrian Sherlock.

Top Gon headline guest Spencer Wilding stars alongside Matt Smith in “The God Complex” for Friday Night Who on 9/16.

And we’ll bring you all the fun from Topeka’s own Top Con this week.

FNW 9/23 is “The Keys Of Marinus” featuring first Doctor William Hartnell. Again, a long one, so parts 1-3 this week.

TTV #298 will have our look at Titan Comics 10th Doctor issues from “season 2”, #2.1 – #2.5, and Big Finish #67 “Dreamtime”.

We’ll finish off “The Keys Of Marinus” with parts 4-6 for FNW on 9/30.

TTV #299 continues season 2 of Titan Comics 10th Doctor comics with issues #2.6 – #2.10 and Big Finish main range story #100 which happens to be called, “100”.

Christopher Eccelson returns to the proceedings for Friday Night Who on 10/7 with “The Long Game”.

A special, TOP SECRET Side Trip #24 fills in the gap for us this week… What could it be?

What on earth could we do for the Friday Night Who (on 10/14) for our 300th Epiversary? Why, Peter Davison’s “The Five Doctors” of course!

And then, the main event itself, Traveling The Vortex #300, which will have all the news fit to print (and some thats not) from Time Eddy II in Wichita. Special Guests! Interviews! Surprises! Flying Monkeys! You DONT want to miss this one!!!

And beyond that? Winter is coming. Which means Christmas is coming. Which means our wilderness year is almost over, and Doctor Who is returning to our screens! Thanks to one and all, stay tuned!

Schedule Here! Get your RED HOT Schedule Here!

For those of you that like to follow along, we present the newest bit of scheduling….

Our weekly dose of Doctor Who with tweet along continues every Friday Night at midnight. This week’s Friday Night Who selection for 5/20 is the Matt Smith episode “Asylum Of The Daleks”.

TTV #282 will be all our experiences from Planet Comicion and possibly excerpts from The Great Traveling The Vortex Quiz Show!

As a special Side Trip, we’ll present the audio in full from our panel at Planet Comicion, “Classic Doctor Who with Jeremy Bulloch”. Jeremy of course played Tor in The Space Museum, and Hal the Archer in The Time Warrior.

FINALLY released in North America, Friday Nigh Who on 5/27 is “The Underwater Menace”

We’ll review that story on TTV #283.

FNW 6/4 is “Time And The Rani”

and TTV #284 has Shaun’s adventures in Omaha at British Fest the Trilogy, and more Seventh Doctor and Mel action in Big Finish #70 Unregenerate!

Powerful and creepy, our offering for the Friday Night Who tweet-a-long on 6/11 is “Midnight”.

Which sets us up nicely to go Beyond The Doctor: David Tennant – What We Did On Our Holiday. We’ll also talk local cons Smallville and Crypticon in episode #285 of Traveling The Vortex.

FNW 6/18 is “The Moonbase”.

Episode #286 is very lunar themed, covering both the TV Comic Moon Landing, and our Book Review of Lethbridge-Stewart: Moon Blink by Sadie Miller.

Another new to us story on 6/24 for FNW, “Masque Of Mandragora”.

Which we’ll review in TTV #287.

“The King’s Demons” starring fifth Doctor Peter Davision kicks of July (7/1) for Friday Night Who.

In TTV #288 we’ll take a look at Titan Comics 8th Doctor Mini series (#1-5), and Big Finish #81 The Kingmaker

FNW 7/8 is Spearhead From Space (Hard to believe we’ve not done an official FNW with that one yet, right?)

But since we’ve already reviewed Spearhead, TTV #289 will instead be devoted to the eighth Doctor Paul McGann and his Big Finish 8th Doctor Adventures Season 2: #3 Brave New Town, #4 The Skull Of Sobek.

Current Doctor Peter Capaldi graces our screens for Friday Night Who on 7/15 in “Robot Of Sherwood”.

And TTV #290 has Titan Comics 12th Doctor #2.1 – #2.5, and Big Finish #84 The Nowhere Place.

Coming up beyond that?   That would be telling.

Traveling Quiz Show To Debut At Planet Comicion 2016

As long time guests to Kansas City’s Planet Comicion, Traveling The Vortex is pleased and to announce something new for this year’s convention. We have been working on a trivia extravaganza that we humbly call “The Great Traveling The Vortex Quiz Show”. It’s one part Qi, one part The Price Is Right, and one part The Gong Show. It’ll be high on energy, fun and audience participation. And if that doesn’t build it up way too much, I’m not sure what else to say. Here’s a super sneak peak:

If you wanna join the fun and have a chance to compete on the show, you better be at Planet Comicion, May 20-22.

TopCon is less than a month away!

If you live or going to be in the Topeka area, you won’t want to miss TopCon: Topeka’s Original Comic & Game Convention, September 18, 19 & 20.
