12th Doctor To Be Revealed on Sunday!

Stand by for an announcement….of an announcement!

Seriously though….the BBC has announced that the actor to play the 12th Doctor will be announced on a Live TV Special, entitled Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor that will air at 7:00 PM (in the UK) on Sunday and 2 pm ET LIVE on BBC AMERICA.

Widely regarded as one of the most hotly contested roles in British television, the show’s host Zoe Ball will unveil the 12th Doctor in the first ever interview in front of a live studio audience set against the backdrop of a swirling vortex, amongst Daleks and the TARDIS.

Current Doctor Matt Smith and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will both give interviews about one of the biggest roles in TV and set out just what it takes to be the Doctor.

They even made at trailer for the show. You can find out more about the special here.

New Console Room Unveiled

Well, we thought we’d have to wait until Christmas to get more than sneak peeks at the new console, but BBC have allowed us to open our present early with this image…

I for one, like the new look.  I think it manages to convey the best bits of the TARDIS throughout the 50 year run of Doctor Who. It’s got the squared off octagonal console of Hartnel’s era, the time rotor from McGann, the color scheme of new Who, this coupled with the Gallifreyan writing on the ceiling, and I think we’ve got a winner.  What are your thoughts?

SEASON SEVEN SEPTEMBER 1ST!

We finally have an official release date of SEPTEMBER 1st for the new season of Doctor Who, starring Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill on BBC and BBC America.

As we predicted, originally before psyching our selves out with all the misdirection and uncertainty it will air day and date with the BBC.  Schedule announcements for the vortex to follow…

New Companion Ident Confirmed

** The following article contains SPOILERS **

Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced as the new companion to the Doctor today by the BBC and Steven Moffat.  We’ve known since Christmas that Amy and Rory would be making an exit from the show sometime this season, and that the Doctor would find a new companion.  Well the details are here (at least some of them, so wait no longer.)

The 25 year old from Blackpool has already made a name for herself on the soap Emmerdale, having been nominated for a National Television Award, British Soap Award, and TV Choice Award.

More details can be found here, from the official BBC Doctor Who Page, and BBC America has a fun selection of clips of some of her other work.  An interview with the actress about being chosen for Doctor Who can be found on the BBC News page.

Here’s the tweet stream from the official BBC Doctor Who Twitter Page:

Jenna-Louise Coleman announced as the new Doctor Who companion. More to come….

“I want to get started already” says Jenna. “I’m a huge fan of the show”. Of her favourite companion “Between Billie Piper & Karen Gillan”

“Matt Smith did my audition with me. It was fun and I felt like we were in it together” says Jenna.

Steven: “We saw a lot of brilliant actresses. But Jenna was the only person going faster than Matt – he had to keep up!”

There will be 6 episodes this year, including the Xmas Special. Then 8 next year. Jenna’s character will first be seen at Xmas.

No announcement on plans for the 50th anniversary given today.

Steven “Amy & Rory will leave in a final encounter with the Weeping Angels in ep 5. Not everyone gets out alive and I mean it this time”

Jenna has asked us to remind you that she does not have and doesn’t plan to have a Twitter account. Beware of imposters!

Doctor Who Video Game!

We’re all gamers here at Traveling the Vortex, and have often spoke of a LEGO Doctor Who game. Well it may not be LEGO but BBC Worldwide has teamed up with Supermassive Games to release a console based game called “Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock” exclusively for the Playstation 3, PC and Sony’s new handheld device, Vita.

It looks like it won’t be disk based, bu a downloadable title.  The game will also feature the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) and River Song (Alex Kingston). And according to the press release “Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries.”

Supermassive Games is no newbie to the Console either…they have created user packs for Little Big Planet 2, as well as Start the Party, and Start the Party 2. The game is set to be released early 2012. Below is the first teaser trailer for the game.

NO Full Series In 2012?

The following comes directly from Anglotopia.net:
June 14, 2011 By jonathan

There were rumors last week that Doctor Who would not be returning in 2012 for a full series and would probably have a series of specials as they did with David Tennant.  That rumor was quickly quashed by the BBC who immediately announced that they had renewed Doctor Who for 14 episodes (a full season and a Christmas Special).

Well, today the plot thickened.

According to many sources now – the BBC’s Danny Cohen stated that there won’t be a full series airing in 2012 but that they’d be saving some episodes for a special run in 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.  We’re not really sure what to make of this news yet – the BBC really needs to release more details on what they’re planning here. They made a big deal about renewing for 14 episodes but won’t be in any particular hurry to air them.

My speculation is that we have the rest of series 6 this fall, followed by a Christmas special. Then I bet we’ll get an Easter special and series 7 will start in fall 2012 and then finish off in Spring 2013.

Whatever happens, we should cherish our new episodes of Doctor Who as they’re going to get increasingly sparse after this year.

Episode 19 – Attack of the Pop Culture References

Better late than never, huh?

In this episode, we review the Third Doctor story Carnival of Monsters. And then a look at Series Six’s latest installment, The Curse of the Black Spot.

And as usual, your feedback. (We even had our first Google Voice submission, thanks Muldwych!)

The show is laden with pop culture references through out, so jot them all down, there may be a pop quiz later!

Enjoy!
