Side Trip 30 – Book Review – The Legends of River Song

In this special Side Trip edition, Keith and Shaun review a book they read way back in January. “The Legends of River Song” was the Goodreads Traveling the Vortex Book Club selection for that month. It was our intention to review it sooner, but we kept pushing it off. So, Glenn thought it would be fun to see what Keith and Shaun could remember, and this is the result.

BREAKING: River Song and Other New Who Characters coming to Big Finish

iconic_image_medium

It was announced today on Big Finish Productions podcast that some of our favorite characters from the New Series will be starring in new titles in the company’s audios set in the Doctor Who Universe. The details were announced on it’s podcast and on it’s website www.bigfinish.com.

Characters announced for the new titles include Alex Kingston as River Song, Ian McNeice returning as Winston Churchill, as well as some new series monster coming up against some of our favorite Classic Doctors.

Here are a few of the details:

~ 27 June 2015

Big Finish is proud to announce a new range of boxsets, featuring heroes and monsters from the New Series of Doctor Who.

Leading this new wave of adventures is Alex Kingston as River Song, the beloved Time Lord archaeologist who first appeared in 2008’s Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

River will be stepping into the era of the Eighth Doctor (Paul McGann) for Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2, alongside Liv Chenka (Nicola Walker) and Helen Sinclair (Hattie Morahan). But how can River help her husband if, in this incarnation, she must never actually meet him?

“The idea of River meeting previous Doctors was actually proposed by Steven Moffat,” says producer David Richardson, “and it’s just irresistible, isn’t it? Alex embraced the idea of returning to the role, and so she will be starring in no less than two box sets next year. And yes, we are still pinching ourselves!”

River will then return later in 2016 in Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song, an epic four-hour adventure that takes River across space and time, seeking out the secret rulers of the universe. Paul McGann will reprise the role of the Eighth Doctor in the final instalment.

There are more surprises in line. Be sure to read the rest of the article, found here.

You can also download Big Finish’s most recent podcast to hear Producer David Richardson and director Ken Bentley talk about the big announcement.

Thanks Dr. Phil for the heads-up on this incredible news.

Happy Birthday Douglas and John and Graeme and Alex!

douglasadamsToday marks FOUR Whovian births, the first, well, we’d be completely remis if we forgot to celebrate good old Douglas Adams birthday today.  Aside from Hitchhikers Guide, he was script editor on Doctor Who for a while, and wrote the episodes “The Pirate Planet” and “City Of Death” along with “Shada”.

harper3

Also celebrating today is director extraordinaire, Graeme Harper, who among others is responsible for “The Waters Of Mars” AND “The Caves Of Androzani”.

JohnBarrowmanAnother birthday boy is the one and only Captain Jack Harkness, John Barrowman, who, we’d like to reiterate, is NOT in the 50th anniversary episode, but is in talks to be.

Big difference kids. 🙂

And last but certainly not least, our birthday girl is Dr. River Song herself, Alex Kingston.

Quadruple Birthday Wishes!

Today marks a bevy of birthdays in the Whoniverse, two onscreen, and two off.

Let’s start with the off-screen birthdays.  First up, today marks what would have been the late great Douglas Adams’ 60th Birthday.  Adams, of course is best known for THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, but he also wrote the episodes “City Of Death”, “The Pirate Planet”, and the never fully produced “Shada”, as well as serving as a script editor for the show.

Also celebrating today is Greame Harper who has been associated with Doctor Who in various capacities since the Pertwee years, but Harper is best known for his directing duties.  He is responsible for “Army Of Ghosts / Doomsday”, “The Stolen Earth / Journey’s End” and “The Waters Of Mars” to name a few, as well as several episodes of the spinoff The Sarah Jane Adventures, but he is renowned for helming “The Caves Of Adrozoni”.  Today Harper turns 67.

Our two on-screen birthday kids include John Barrowman, who plays everyone’s favorite rouge Captain Jack Harkness on both Doctor Who and Torchwood.  He celebrates birthday number 45 today.

And last but certainly not least is the Doctor’s wife herself, River Song.  Alex Kingston turns 49 today, though we don’t think she looks a day over 29.

Please join Traveling The Vortex in raising a glass to toast best wishes to all of them!

Doctor Who Video Game!

We’re all gamers here at Traveling the Vortex, and have often spoke of a LEGO Doctor Who game. Well it may not be LEGO but BBC Worldwide has teamed up with Supermassive Games to release a console based game called “Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock” exclusively for the Playstation 3, PC and Sony’s new handheld device, Vita.

It looks like it won’t be disk based, bu a downloadable title.  The game will also feature the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) and River Song (Alex Kingston). And according to the press release “Gamers must learn to master the complexities of time travel with exceptional time based game play, changes made in one time will impact another creating multiple possibilities and challenging players to solve puzzles across the centuries.”

Supermassive Games is no newbie to the Console either…they have created user packs for Little Big Planet 2, as well as Start the Party, and Start the Party 2. The game is set to be released early 2012. Below is the first teaser trailer for the game.

Episode 49 – The Midnight Special

A little less heated this weeks as we discuss the very first appearance of River Song in Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead. Then on to the companion lite story, Midnight, followed by a Doctor lite one, Turn Left.

Also a Chicago TARDIS report (x2) from Dr. Phil, and of course, your feedback.

Vortex Event Horizons: The Doctor and Donna and Daleks, Oh My!

Coming up on the Vortex horizon…

Three weeks of Daleks coming up on Friday Night Who! This week’s post Thanksgiving slot (11/25 will be the 5th Doctor entry,”Resurrection Of The Daleks” (especially apt since this week also marks Chicago Tardis, staring none other than Peter Davison.  The following week 12/2 is 6th Doctor Colin Baker’s outing “Revelation Of The Daleks”.  And that means the masterpiece “Remembrance Of The Daleks” starring 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy is on 12/9.

On the show front, next week’s episode #48 has us hitting the highlights of Chicago Tardis (still time to let us know if you are going and would like to act as a correspondent!) and reviews of fourth season episodes “The Doctor’s Daughter” and “The Unicorn And The Wasp”.  Number 49 contains our reviews of “Midnight” and “Turn Left”, along with a recap of two we’ve already done, the River Song introductory stories “Silence In The Library” and “Forrest Of The Dead”.  We figured it was important for Donna’s character development for Keith to revisit these in order, not to mention we can hunt for all the hidden nuggets Moffat was sure to have planted early for River.  And the BIG 5-0 episode is an Adversary Archive on the Daleks (and a certain megalomaniac) as we go back and cover the Friday Night Who’s of the last three weeks.

After that, we set up our exit strategy for season four and the end of the year.  Expect some holiday cheer, Paul McGann and our first BIG FINISH reviews!
