OFFICIAL: POWER OF THE DALEKS TO BE ANIMATED

While speculation has run rampant for weeks now, BBC Worldwide has just announced the official word on the project. All six parts of the Patrick Troughton story “The Power Of The Daleks” will be animated and released for the episode’s 50th Anniversary.

It’s a move that surprises no one after a clip surfaced (and was immediately removed by BBC) on line, but delights everyone. Power of the Daleks is reported to be one of the more iconic, and powerful stories in the show’s history. It’s Troughton’s first episode, and features the first regeneration, (here called renewal) by William Hartnell into Troughton. While that clip is technically the very end of the preceding story, The Tenth Planet, this episode deals with the ramifications. The story features the second Doctor, Polly and Ben fighting Daleks on the planet Vulcan. It aired only once, and unfortunately was junked as part of the BBCs then standard practice.

The animation is being produced by the same team that did a highly successful animation for a missing episode of Dad’s Army “A Stripe For Frazer”, which was first released on BBC Store in February this year. The producer and director is Charles Norton, with character designs from acclaimed comic book artists Martin Geraghty and Adrian Salmon.

Charles Norton says: “The Power of the Daleks animation is the most ambitious Doctor Who archive restoration ever attempted and we’re all very honoured to be a part of such a an exciting project. Intelligent, suspenseful and magnificently staged, Power of the Daleks is one of the great lost classics of 1960s television and a superb example of the black and white era at its finest.”

Previous animations commissioned by the BBC were usually only two segments to complete a serial that was missing individual pieces, such as “The Reign Of Terror”, “The Tenth Planet”, “The Underwater Menace”, “The Moonrise”, “The Ice Warriors” and “The Invasion”.

“The Power Of The Daleks” will initially be exclusively released on BBC Store, with episode one available on the 50th anniversary of it’s original air date, Saturday, November 5th at 5:50pm.  The others will be released on consecutive days thereafter. Readers can register their interest in the download at the BBC Store. The story will become available online more widely on the 14th of November, and will also be released on DVD in the United Kingdom on the 21st of November.

No other regions have been announced at present.

In addition to the story’s release, there will be a special screening of the first three episodes at the BFI in London, which will include a Q&A with Anneke Wills, Charles Norton and Frazer Hines. Further information will be available from the BFI website from Monday September 19th.

Paul Hembury, Executive Producer, BBC Worldwide says: “Charles and his team are remarkably talented and passionate about Doctor Who and we are thrilled that fans will soon be able to enjoy this rather sinister but wonderful, classic story.”

There is no other information on what this announcement means for other missing episodes.

Update:

In the U.S. BBC America announced “The Power of the Daleks” will air Sunday, Nov. 12th and will be available online to stream the next day.

The “Wait, we’ve been doing this for HOW LONG?” Schedule

It was with a mixture of shocked surprise and gratitude that when compiling the next pieces of the schedule we realized we were coming up on the big 300th episode here at Traveling The Vortex. As always, we remain hopefully humble and slightly bemused that people are still listening, and seem to like what we’re doing, so again, we thank you! Keeping in that spirit, we wanted to do something a little special for the “epiversary” (even if it meant bending the rules just a little bit). So lets dive into the upcoming madness…

Our weekly Doctor Who watch party Friday Night Who continues on 8/19 with the David Tennant episode “Gridlock”. A reminder everyone is welcome to join in on Twitter, look for the #FridayNightWho hashtags, we push play at midnight.

Episode #295 of the podcast is both An Adversary Archive on The Macra, AND a Lost In Time discussion of The Macra Terror, which sadly no longer exists. We’ll be revieiwng the telesnap recon and the novelization of this Patrick Troughton story.

FNW 8/26 is “Heaven Sent” staring Peter Capaldi.

Which should set us up nicely for our final Beyond The Doctor discussion of the year, We’ll talk Peter Capalid and his performance In The Loop for TTV #296.

A change in what was scheduled before, as FNW on 9/2 is now “The Silurians” (Or Doctor Who and the Silurians, if we must.) This is a long one, so we’ll split it up and do the first four parts this week.

No show this week, but we don’t want to leave you high and dry, so instead we’ll bring you some fun courtesy of Candy Jar Books and Lethbridge-Stewart: The Showstoppers author Jonathan Cooper.

FNW 9/9 finishes off “The Silurians” with parts 5-7.

TTV #297 is a Book Review, we’ll give our thoughts on Candy Jar Book’s Lethbridge-Stewart: The Grandfather Infestation by John Peel and the next short story The Playing Dead by Adrian Sherlock.

Top Gon headline guest Spencer Wilding stars alongside Matt Smith in “The God Complex” for Friday Night Who on 9/16.

And we’ll bring you all the fun from Topeka’s own Top Con this week.

FNW 9/23 is “The Keys Of Marinus” featuring first Doctor William Hartnell. Again, a long one, so parts 1-3 this week.

TTV #298 will have our look at Titan Comics 10th Doctor issues from “season 2”, #2.1 – #2.5, and Big Finish #67 “Dreamtime”.

We’ll finish off “The Keys Of Marinus” with parts 4-6 for FNW on 9/30.

TTV #299 continues season 2 of Titan Comics 10th Doctor comics with issues #2.6 – #2.10 and Big Finish main range story #100 which happens to be called, “100”.

Christopher Eccelson returns to the proceedings for Friday Night Who on 10/7 with “The Long Game”.

A special, TOP SECRET Side Trip #24 fills in the gap for us this week… What could it be?

What on earth could we do for the Friday Night Who (on 10/14) for our 300th Epiversary? Why, Peter Davison’s “The Five Doctors” of course!

And then, the main event itself, Traveling The Vortex #300, which will have all the news fit to print (and some thats not) from Time Eddy II in Wichita. Special Guests! Interviews! Surprises! Flying Monkeys! You DONT want to miss this one!!!

And beyond that? Winter is coming. Which means Christmas is coming. Which means our wilderness year is almost over, and Doctor Who is returning to our screens! Thanks to one and all, stay tuned!

Episode 294 – Franklin, Are There More Scones?

ttv_logo_newWe take another break from Doctor Who this week to look at our 11th installment of our ongoing Beyond the Doctor series. This time it’s Matt Smith’s turn with a look at the film Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. We give our views on the film and the performance by the 11th Doctor actor.

Also, some Time Eddy II appearance shake-ups with the announcement of some drop outs and a very big drop in.

Enjoy!
