May The Schedule Be With You

Here’s a schedule update to carry us forward into June:

Friday Night Who on 4/25 is the recently discovered (and just released on DVD in North America) Patrick Troughton story “The Web Of Fear” Parts 1-3.

Show #174 finishes our review of  “Torchwood: Miracle Day” (episodes 6-10), as well as an overview of the entire season, and the web comic “Web Of Lies”.

FNW on 5/2 we complete “The Web Of Fear” Parts 4-6.

To celebrate our epivesrary in episode #175,  we present an Adversary Archive on The Great Intelligence.  At least the first part. We’ll be covering it’s appearances in “The Snowmen”, “The Abominable Snowmen* “, and have our review of “The Web Of Fear”.

* NOTE – “The Abominable Snowmen” is not available other than as recon or book format, as it has unfortunately not been recovered. You may have some difficulty finding it to join in our review.

FNW 5/9 is a taste of Matt Smith in “The Bells Of St. John”.

We continue our Adversary Archive on The Great Intelligence with Part 2 in Traveling The Vortex #176.  We’ll be covering the villains appearances in “Downtime* “, “The Bells Of St. John”, and “The Name Of The Doctor”.

* NOTE – “Downtime” is a fan produced spin off film that had a VHS release, and was also part of the Virgin New Adventures line of books. As such, you may have some difficulty finding it to join in our review.

May is the fifth Doctor’s month, so for Friday Night Who on 5/16 we’ll watching “Four To Doomsday”.

TTV #177 has our reviews of “Four To Doomsday” and E Book 5 “Tip Of The Tongue”.

Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston comes back to Friday Night Who on 5/23 in “Dalek”.

Which sets up episode #178 – The Adaptation Argument. We’ll be comparing and contrasting the supposed connections between Big Finish #40 “Jubilee” vs “Dalek”.

More fifth Doctor on 5/30 for FNW as we (finally! Chrissy shouts) watch “Caves Of Androzani”.

Our entire show for #179 is dedicated to the masterpiece that is “Caves Of Androzani”, and weather or not its worthy of that status.

And as we wind into June, 6/6 brings us the next story, Colin Baker’s debut in “The Twin Dilemma”.

June is the sixth Doctor’s month, so Traveling The Vortex #180 is all about him. We’ll review “The Twin Dilemma” and E Book 6  “Something Borrowed”.

After that?  Not a clue yet. But we’ll keep you posted.

Planet Comicon Photos

Friend of the show Kellen was also at Planet Comicon and emailed us these pictures he was able to get of our panel as well as a few bonus pictures. Enjoy!

You can find Kellen on Facebook. He also is a photographer for the Wichita Business Journal.

It’s Spring Time For Schedule

This week is Planet Comicon… so the “schedule” may be a bit wobbly wobbly. BUT, we plan on doing “Remembrance Of The Daleks” on 3/14 with Sylvester McCoy. (keep in mind we may not actually get to participate much due to our con responsibilities.)

Our show this week #168 will be all about our experiences at KC Planet Comicon 2014.

On 3/21 FNW is  Jon Pertwee in the first 3 parts of “The Mutants”.

TTV #169 is what we’re jokingly calling “The Fan Show 2”.  Expect some more interviews and some surprises…

FNW on 3/28 we finish “The Mutants” Part 4-6.

We have our third Doctor celebration in episode #170 as we discuss “The Mutants” and E Book 3: “The Spear Of Destiny”.

We go all the way back to William Hartnell for FNW on 4/4 in “The War Machines”.

TTV #171 contains our reviews of “The War Machines” and Big Finish #80 “Time Works”.

For April’s fourth Doctor celebration, Friday Night Who on 4/11 is “Image Of The Fendahl”.

and then for the show TTV #172 “Image Of The Fendahl” and E Book 4: “The Roots Of Evil”.

On 4/18 David Tennant makes a return appearance to FNW in Series 3s “Tooth And Claw”.

We side step out of the Whoniverse a bit in episode #173 by covering the first 5 episodes of “Torchwood: Miracle Day”.

4/25 brings us the first three parts of the recently released Patrick Troughton serial “The Web Of Fear” on Friday Night Who.

Our show that week (TTV #174) wraps up Miracle Day with “Torchwood: Miracle Day” Parts 6-10.

And then we finish “The Web Of Fear” with Parts 4-6 on 5/2 for Friday Night Who.

And on the horizon? I’m sorry, it’s the event horizon of a black hole, and the schedule was sucked

into it just

now.

Schedule, Beware The Ides Of March!

A short scheduling update this week, as we wanted to give you heads up on a couple of audios coming up!

This week’s Friday Night Who (2/28) is the long awaited, recently released Patrick Troughton second Doctor story “The Moonbase”

Our show (TTV #166) will include reviews of “The Moonbase” as well as the second E Book from the 50th Anniversary series, “The Nameless City”.

FNW on 3/7 is Planet Of The Ood with tenth Doctor, David Tennant.

A pair of big finish audios for TTV #167, both main line stories: #37 The Sandman featuring sixth Doctor Colin Baker and Evelyn, and #39 Bang-Bang-a-Boom with seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy.

We’re concocting something special for Friday Night Who the week of 3/14 (In fact, it may not even happen on Friday).  Suffice to say we are attempting to involve Kansas City Planet Comicon guest Sylvester McCoy to join us in some way, shape or form.  We’ll try and keep you updated as best we can. Right now it looks like it will either be “Remembrance Of The Daleks” OR “The Happiness Patrol” for the story that week.  Trust us, there’s a method at work here.  Madness too.  But a method nonetheless.

And episode #168 will be a full breakdown of our experiences at Kansas City Planet Comicon for our listeners.

More to come as we get things finalized!

The Schedule Games

As promised, here’s the upcoming schedule for those of you who like to follow along at home…

Friday Night Who on 1/31 is the Christopher Eccleston two parter, “Aliens In London” / “World War III”.

Saturday February first at 10pm is a special Flicks With Friends. Join us for the original Planet Of The Apes.

TTV #162  has our reviews of the next two Paul McGann Big Finish stories #75 “Scaredy Cat” and #77 “Other Lives”.

FNW 2/7 is 7th Doctor (and recent addition to the Kanas City Planet Comicon guest list) Sylvester McCoy in “Survival”.

Fun and Games are on the docket for TTV #163 as we talk about Doctor Who Legacy, Doctor Who Monopoly, and the Doctor Who Card Game.

A romantic Friday Night Who for Valentine’s Day celebrates the secret love the Doctor and the Rani share.  Or is it the clandestine threesome with the Master?  Whatever. We’re celebrating Colin Baker being at Gally, so on 2/14 it’s “The Mark Of The Rani”.

Keith and Glenn will tackle some book reviews on TTV #164:  Keith is reading the third Doctor story Harvest Of Time by Alistair Reynolds while Glenn tackles the tenth Doctor story The Resurrection Casket by Justin Richards.  And while Shaun will be recovering from Gally and enjoying the So Cal Sunshine, he’s committed to trying to read Spiral Scratch by Gary Russell, featuring the sixth Doctor.

Peter Davison (and Adric) returns to FNW on 2/21 for “Earthshock”.

Now of course we’ll have all the updates and side trips from Gally as the weekend progresses, but the full blown story of the 25 Years Of Galifrey One will unfold in episode #165.

And a real treat for Friday Night Who on 2/28 as we watch Patrick Troughton in the soon-to-be-just released in North America  “The Moonbase” with completed animation segments!

and for Traveling The Vortex #166 we’ll review “The Moonbase” along with the second in last year’s 50th anniversary E Books, “The Nameless City”.

More goodies on tap for March, including all the awesomeness that is sure to be Kansas City Planet Comicion.  Stay tuned!

New Year, New Schedule

*** CORRECTED ***

As the final days of Matt Smith and 2013 wane and Peter Capaldi and 2014 near, we present the schedule for January of those of you who like to follow along at home.  Sorry for the late notice positing this, holiday scheduling is trixy for fat Hobbitses.

The last Friday Night Who of 2013 features Peter Capaldi as… some other guy. David Tennant stars in “The Fires Of Pompeii”.

Our show this week is all about the epic Christmas special “The Time Of The Doctor” and bidding Matt Smith a fond farewell.

* On 1/3 we’ll watch first Doctor William Hartnell in “Planet Of Giants” (NOT “The Sensorites”) for FNW.

* TTV #158 will have our review of “Planet Of Giants”, and the first of last year’s E Books: “A Big Hand For The Doctor”.

Friday Night Who on 1/10 starts “The E-Space Trilogy: Full Circle” with fourth Doctor Tom Baker.

TTV #159 is the Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventure #2: “The Renaissance Man”, and “Full Circle”.

FNW 1/17 continues “The E-Space Trilogy: State Of Decay”.

TTV #160 is Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures #3: “The Wrath of The Iceni” and “State Of Decay”.

We finish “The E-Space Trilogy: Warriors Gate” for Friday Night Who on 1/24.

Our show (TTV #161) that week will cover “Warriors Gate”, and The E-Space Trilogy in full.

Christopher Eccleston rounds out the month for FNW on 1/31 in the two part “Aliens In London / World War III”

Leaving our show (TTV #162) open for some Paul McGann Big Finish stories, #75 “Scaredy Cat”, and #77 “Other Lives”.

That takes us up to February, which of course is Gally, and sees the US release of “The Moonbase”.  More details as we get them!

Name of the Christmas Special Revealed

It appears that some postulating by Shaun was incorrect THIS time. The BBC has announced that the Doctor Who Christmas special will be called ‘The Time of the Doctor’

Silence Will Fall When The Schedule Is Posted

While the rest of Whoville catches their collective breaths after the 50th, here at Traveling The Vortex, we still have miles to go before we sleep.

First up is a surprise addition to the schedule, our impromptu “Who With Friends” will be doing “The Three Doctors” sometime this week, keep an eye on @VortexKeith twitter feed for details.

Officially, if you’re not all tuckered out from Thanksgiving turkey and Black Friday shopping, Friday Night Who on 11/29 will be “The Five Doctors (Special Edition)”.

Our show this week (TTV #153) covers the audio goodness of Big Finish with a detailed look at “The Light At The End”.

Join us in sending all our love to long ago.  William Hartnell’s swan song “The Tenth Planet” is Friday Night Who 12/6.

That sets up TTV #154 to be Cybermen Archive IV, as we review “The Tenth Planet”, and Big Finish #34 “Spare Parts”.

FNW 12/13 brings us Christopher Eccelston in “The Long Game”.

Which sets up TTV #155 where we’ll cover the ending of IDW Prisoners Of Time comic with a look at issues 11 and 12.  And since December is our month to celebrate the 11th Doctor… (or is it twelfth now? HA! Traveling The Vortex had it right all along!) we’ll discuss Doctor Who Revisited: the 11th Doctor.

Just prior to Christmas, on 12/20 Friday Night Who celebrates with “The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe”.

We continue our 11th Doctor celebrations in TTV #156 with a look at Big Finish “Destiny Of The Doctor: The Time Machine”, and our retrospective 50th Anniversary Discussion over the 11th Doctor Era.

Friday Night Who heralds the arrival of Peter Capaldi on 12/27 with “The Fires Of Pompeii”.

And we round out the year with TTV #157 and our discussion of the 2013 Xmas Special, which if I know Moffat (and I do kids, oh yes, I do) will be called “Silent Night”.

And that brings us up to 2014, and our (gulp) third year of the podcast.  As always we thank you, our listeners and fans for keeping us around, keeping us honest, keeping us humble… and sharing the love.

Goodnight everybody!

What?  You want a hint of next year?  Really?  Do I have to keep doing that sneak peak thing?  I mean it was cute and clever a few times, but you really want more?  (sigh) Okay, okay.  January is still in a state of temporal flux while DVD release dates are hammered out, but you might want to make sure a certain trilogy is in your catalogue, least you be left in E-Space…

Loose Threads: Around The Vortex 11/11/13

loosethreads

Waiting for the other shoe to drop is not my strong suit.  It’s been slightly over a month since the announcement of Lost Episodes found, officially.  And we rejoiced, we celebrated, we wept tears of excitement and gathered around our iTunes and watched television that has not been seen on this Earth for 4o-something years.

And now the rumor mill turns once more, with the idea that this was only the tip of the iceberg. (Something I have said from day one).  Either another handful of episodes have been located, or upwards of 90 episodes have been located.

Or not.

It’s all speculation at this point, but allow me to play a game of “what if?”

What if they have struck gold?  What if episodes have been recovered?  What if our children will never know of a day when there were only six or eight or twelve complete Troughton stories?  Obviously, we all have our fingers crossed and are hoping and praying for the best news to come from these incessant rumors.  And yet, I am afraid.  It’s irrational, and silly, and stupid, but the fear is as real as my excitement.  What if they do make this announcement that 90 episodes have been recovered?

Then what?

I mean, from a purely selfish standpoint, it’s like the kid who got everything he ever wanted for Christmas one year, then got a pair of socks the next.  How could we EVER live up to another announcement after that one?  90 episodes?  Fandom exploded when 4 parts of “Tomb Of The Cybermen” were discovered in Hong Kong.  It happened again with one ep each of “Galaxy 4” and “The Underwater Menace” in 2011.  And as we are all aware, 9 episodes of “The Web Of Fear” and “Enemy Of The World” discoveries have lead to a euphoric high that we’re still riding.  What would 90 do?  Seriously, this is almost one of those keep the existence of these secret for the good of all humanity because we’re not ready yet kind of decisions.

Or worse yet, what if these lost episodes all come out and they suck?  I mean, would we really be celebrating the discovery of “Fear Her”?

I’d love to have the suspense kept, as they dole out an episode or two every six months or so, saying “yep, we just now discovered “The Smugglers” in a closet in Kerplackechstan, enjoy.” but as Glenn pointed out, that would destroy the BBC’s already tenuous credibility with the fans.  So, more than likely the announcement will be made all at once.

If there’s any to announce.

Do the list and really think about it for a minute…  Marco Polo, The Crusade, The Myth Makers, The Celestial Toymaker, The Highlanders, The Evil Of The Daleks, The Abominable Snowman, The Wheel In Space… There’s some heavy hitters in that group, the stuff of legend and folk lore.  Episodes that I have NEVER seen, only heard whispered about in the corners of fandom as we lament their nonexistence…

My other concern, and again, it’s stupid–what if finding these episodes tarnishes Doctor Who somehow?  I mean, we are a unique group among sic-fi fans anyway.  Star Trek can always point to their cancelation and say “but we got renewed twice”.  Firefly fans can complain “we got canned after a dozen episodes, but at least we got a movie out of it”.  But Who fans are the proverbial bad luck fans.  Who else can cry “Oh yeah? Over 90 of our episodes were junked and don’t exist anymore, take that!”  In a weird way, that unites us as fans, it gives us a common tragic backstory.

One that may be about to be re-written.

Or maybe not.

Either way, I feel like I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop since June.  So many things to be thankful for, so much Who in this 50th anniversary year… and yet…

One thing’s for sure.  We live in interesting times.

Or maybe not.
