Episode 126 – The History Of Coffee

ttv 1400 anniIn this week’s show, we look back on the Fourth Doctor’s era. First a review of the Big Finish/Audio GO production of Doctor Who: Babblesphere (Destiny of the Doctor 4). Then, we look at the Fourth Doctor installment of The Doctor Revisited.

Then, we try to pin down the best stories of the era that really zero on on the essence of the Fourth Doctor.

Also, a look at this week’s… oh, we’ve got nothing on the news front, sorry. At least nothing that peaked our interest.

And, of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Schedules, Schedules, Get Your Schedules Here!

We’ve tweaked the upcoming schedule a bit to line up better with our 50th Anniversary plans, so for those of you following along at home, here’s an update for the next month or so…

The first week of March (3/1) we’ll finish “The Reign Of Terror” (parts 4-6) on Friday Night Who.

Traveling The Vortex #114 is our First Doctor retrospective.  We’ll discuss “The Reign Of Terror”, give our thoughts on the values of these and other animated episodes, as well as cover the first Doctor era (that we’ve reviewed to date).

Friday Night Who on 3/8 is “The King’s Demons” with fifth Doctor Peter Davison.

TTV #115 covers our reviews of “The King’s Demons” and Big Finish #26 “Primeval”.

Come celebrate my birthday on 3/15 with Tom Baker in “The Ark In Space”.

Traveling The Vortex #116 will have our reviews of “The Ark In Space” and our first foray into the Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures; #1 “Destination: Nerva”.

On 3/22 our Friday Night Who will be the 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton in “The Mind Robber”.

And episode #117 will be our Second Doctor retrospective, and have our reviews of the “The Mind Robber” as well as IDW’s comic “Prisoners Of Time” issue 2, and Big Finish’s Shadow of Death (Destiny Of The Doctor 2).

That rams us right up against the new series starting.

(SPOILERS AHEAD) I’m still fleshing things out from that point on, but if the scuttlebutt is to be believed, the first episode of the return of series seven deals with ghosts.  I’d love to pair up the seventh Doctor adventure “Ghost Light” with that one, but we’ll wait and see if things get a bit more nailed down in the coming weeks.

Friday Night Who 2/8/13

The_Leisure_Hive_DVD_US_cover-1Tonight for Friday Night Who we’ll be watching The Leisure Hive, starring fourth Doctor Tom Baker.

Look for the #FridayNightWho and #TheLeisureHive hashtags, we push play at midnight.

A Midsummer-Night’s Schedule

Coming up on the Vortex… Friday Night Who on 7/27 features the fourth Doctor in “The Horns Of Nimon”

Our show that week #83 is a Nimon adversary archive, featuring our reviews of “The Horns Of Nimon” and Big Finish #30 “Seasons Of Fear”.

Starting in August the following week on FNW is fifth Doctor Peter Davison in “Time Flight”.

TTV #84 will include our reviews of “Time Flight” and Big Finish #10 “Winter For The Adept”.

Sixth Doctor Colin Baker returns to the FNW line up on 8/10 in “Timelash”.

Our reviews of the sixth Doctor adventures “Timelash”, and Big Finish #3 “Whispers Of Terror” make up our 85th episode of Traveling The Vortex.

And then in honor of Keith and Sarah’s wedding on the 18th of August, for our Friday Night Who the night before (8/17) we’ll watch Keith’s favorite episode, “Vincent And The Doctor”.

Keith will be gone on holiday–his honeymoon–the 19th through the 27th, so TTV #86 will just be Glenn and Shaun with a second set of Book Reviews: Glenn will review The Eight Doctors featuring the eighth Doctor by Terrance Dicks, while Shaun takes a stab at Amorality Tale by David Bishop featuring the third Doctor.

Beyond that we’re in a state of flux while we wait for an official start date for series seven (though we believe it to be on or about the 25th.)  We’ll play the next few weeks by ear until such time as a official release date comes down the pipe.

Episode 80 – All Things Shada

We’ve been promising a review of Shada and the time has finally come. This week we look at, Shada – The Novel, Shada – The VHS reconstruction, Shada – The Big Finish audio and BBCi webisode, and Shada – The Flamethrower (The kids love this one.)

Also, a look at one really cool bit of news, the sonic screwdriver t.v. remote control. Yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.

Plus your feed back!

Enjoy!

Tom Baker To Return To Doctor Who?

The past few weeks have been a veritable who’s who of actors being announced for guest star spots on the new season of Doctor Who.  David Warner (TIME BANDITS, TRON, STAR TREK VI, TITANIC), Liam Cunningham (FIRST KNIGHT, CLASH OF THE TITANS, Game Of Thrones), Dougray Scott (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2, ENIGMA), Ben Browder (Farscape, Stargate SG1) Michael McShane (ROBIN HOOD PRINCE OF THIEVES, CLERKS, SPAWN) and most recently Dame Diana Rigg (The Avengers, ON HER MAJESTIES SECRET SERVICE, Mystery!) and her daughter Rachael Stirling (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, CENTURIAN).

And now, there’s rumors circulating that MAY be more than rumors, that Tom Baker will be returning to the show for the 50th anniversary.

Ordinarily we’d write it off as “yeah, right”, BUT STV’s website had a report saying:

“Former Time Lord Tom Baker will return to ‘Doctor Who’ to mark the show’s 50th anniversary.  The 78-year-old actor, who played The Doctor from 1974 to 1981 on BBC One’s iconic sci-fi drama, is being lined up to reprise his role in 2013.  A ‘Doctor Who’ insider told The Daily Express: ”It will be fitting to have Tom back to mark the 50 years. He was a big part of the show’s success and is much-loved by the fans.”

Check out the full article here.

The interesting part here is STV is reporting something reported by The Daily Express, who claims to have gotten the info from a “Doctor Who insider”.  It may be something, or it may be nothing.  If something, I would love to be kept in the dark until the credit sequence of that episode runs across my tv screen.  But I’d also love to be barraged with a series of announcements over the next few weeks confirming all the remaining Doctors are coming back.  Until then… who knows?

Happy Birthday, Lalla Ward!

Lalla Ward of course played opposite Tom Baker’s fourth Doctor as Princess Astra in “The Armageddon Factor” and later became Romanadvoratrelundar or Romana for short. Often referred to as Romana II, (since she replaced Mary Tamm) a role she held from “Destiny Of The Daleks” up through “Warrior’s Gate”.  Today is her 61st birthday.
