Rascals, Rogues and Renegades: Vortex Homework

Good morning! (Or Good afternoon or Good evening depending on your particular time zone) here’s an update on some of the fun things we have planned coming up on the really big show.

(Thanks, Mr. Sullivan!)

Friday Night Who this week is the just released in North America “The Robots Of Death – Special Edition” staring Tom Baker.

Show #65 is a big one.  We’ll discuss new companion Jenna-Louise Coleman, our experiences at KC Planet Comicon, and hopefully have some live reports from The Official Doctor Who Convention in Cardiff from roving Traveling The Vortex reporter Philip Malkin.

For the One Year Anniversary of Friday Night Who on 3/30 we return to Jon Pertwee’s era with “The Sea Devils” (which means Shaun will finally get a chance to see it.)

Our planned companion archive for Leela gets bumped to the following show, #66 as we’ll review “The Face Of Evil” and “The Robots Of Death”

Then in APRIL we see the start of the Renegades, as our 4/6 Friday Night Who is “The Time Meddler” with William Hartnell.

Traveling The Vortex #67 will review “The Time Meddler” AND Big Finish #1 “Sirens Of Time”.

4/13 for Friday Night Who will be the first part of “The War Games” with Patrick Troughton. We’re only doing Parts 1-5 this week!

More Big Finish on the way for episode #68, a companion archive for Evelyn Smythe.  Big Finish #6 “The Marion Conspiracy”, #9 “The Spectre Of Lanyon Moor”, and #22 “Bloodtide”.

On 4/20 we’ll finish up the remaining 5 parts of “The War Games” on Friday Night Who.

We’ll spend episode #69 covering the epic “The War Games”

Friday Night Who on 4/27 will see us jump forward to the Peter Davison era for “Arc Of Infinity”.

And show number #70 will cover “Arc Of Infinity” and Big Finish #47 “Omega”

That’ll take us all the way to May, so you’ve got your assignments outlined!

What’s that?  You wanna know what’s up in May?  Hmmm… More Renegades, Sarah Jane,  and the return of everyone’s favorite pepper pots…

Friday Night Who 1/20/12

While tempted to do a Tom Baker story tonight in honor of his birthday, we have a schedule to adhere to, so tonight at midnight (CST) we hope you’ll push play on Patrick Troughton’s 2nd Doctor story, “The Seeds Of Death”.  As always, join @vortexglenn, @vortexshaun, @VortexKeith and @travelvortex for the live tweet-a-long and look for the #FridayNightWho and #TheSeedsOfDeath hashtags.

And if you’re hankering for some Tom Baker, I understand #DWBarUSA is watching “The Talons of Weng Chiang” tomorrow at 7:30 EST!

Happy New Vortex Schedule

Hope 2012 is starting off great for everyone, we’ve got (we hope) some fun things planned for this year, starting with our show tonight, (#53) in which we’ll cover the first three Paul McGann audio adventures from Big Finish, #16 Storm Warning, #17 The Sword Of Orion, and #18 The Stones Of Venice.

There’s been a change in the program line up for Friday Night Who on 1/6, instead of our previously listed “The Seeds Of Death” we’ll be jumping ahead to “The Curse Of Peladon” with 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee

Traveling The Vortex episode #54 has our discussion of the animated story “Dreamland” and the first of the specials, “The Next Doctor”.

Friday Night Who for 1/13 follows with the Pertwee adventure, “The Monster Of Peladon”

We continue working through the specials with TTV #55, covering “Planet Of The Dead” and “The Waters Of Mars”

Then Friday Night Who on 1/20 will be the delayed Patrick Troughton episode “The Seeds Of Death”

Our 56th episode will be an Adversary Archive featuring the fearsome Ice Warriors, as we go back and recap the last three weeks with “Curse Of Peladon”, “Monster Of Peladon” and “Seeds Of Death”

To round out January, join us on 1/27 for Friday Night Who featuring the last David Tennant story, “The End Of Time Part 1 and 2”

And then we’ll spend a whole episode talking about that epic story, (and the fact that Keith will have now seen ALL of new Who).

As always, thank you for listening!

Happy Birthday, Jamie & Rose!

Please join us today in wishing a very happy 67th birthday to Frazer Hines, who played Jamie McCrimmon against Patrick Trouton’s 2nd Doctor.

And a happy 29th Birthday to Billie Piper, who was of course, Rose Tyler opposite both Christopher Eccleston’s 9th and David Tennant’s 10th Doctors.

Doctor Who Variety Hour

Here on Traveling the Vortex we tend to discuss the variety that Doctor Who brings on the show. From actor’s different takes on the Doctor to the tone of various stories.

With Doctor Who returning this Saturday the great folks over at io9 wrote up an interesting article about how there are almost as many different shows within Doctor Who as there are regenerations. They even include video examples.

Episode 34 – Goo Goo G’Joob

Third Doctor: Jo, it’s all quite simple – I am he and he is me!
Jo Grant: And we are all together, goo goo g’joob?

In this week’s episode we review four multi-Doctor stories, starting with the classic Third Doctor story, The Three Doctors. We follow that up with the less then stellar, The Two Doctors, and then the absolutely superb mini-episode, Time Crash. And to round things out, we talk a little about the multi-Doctor extravaganza, Dimensions in Time.

Oh, and of course news and your feedback! Enjoy!

“Excusive” KC 48 hr Film Project

Special Thursday Edition Of Friday Night Who 7/18/11

UPDATED: For tonight’s special Thursday edition of #FridayNightWho, we will be starting #TheTwoDoctors at 11:30pm CDT and NOT midnight. Hope to see you then!

Once again throwing a curve ball your way by changing up our traditional #FridayNightWho to thursday this week.  The Vortex boys will be taking part in another 48 hour film festival this weekend, (This time it’s the 48hr Film Project, an international affair that will see our film compete against other for Best of Kansas City.  If we win that, we go against the winners of other cities, including Chicago, Denver, LA, New York, etc… Wish us luck!)

So, Thursday night at midnight 11:30 pm CDT join us on Twitter for tweet-a-long with the Colin Baker entry into our multi-doctor stories, #TheTwoDoctors, also starring Patrick Troughton.  Look for the hashtags and let’s ahve some fun with this iconic story!  And let’s start tweeting @SawbonesHex, @thenicolabryant, and @frazerhines (The sixth Doctor,  Peri and Jamie respectively) to see if we can get them to join us or perhaps give us a retweet!

Episode 33 – The Episode Of Rassilon

Here it is, and back on time this week. Recorded from our new studio digs (or in other word’s Shaun and Keith’s place) is this week’s show. This time, we review The Five Doctors.

Not much news going on this week, well of course with the exception of Keith moving in with Shaun, and now I only have a 2 minute commute as opposed to a 20 minute commute to record on Sunday. Can you tell how happy I am that Keith moved?

Also, your feedback!

* The Retraction Of Rassilon: Wanting to stem the flow of corrections early, we got into a bit of a quagmire over the name of Patrick Troughton’s son in this episode.  Turns out he has 2, David Troughton is an actor who, among other credits played King Peladon in “The Curse Of Peladon” and his younger brother Michael Troughton is currently at work on a biography of his late father due out in November.

Five Doctors For Friday Night Who 8/12/11

This is it.  This is THE BIG ONE! #FridayNightWho tonight at midnight CDT features William Hartnell, Richard Hurndall, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker AND Peter Davison in #TheFiveDoctors.  We’ll be watching the Special Edition version, so follow @vortexKeith, @vortexglenn @vortexshaun and @travelvortex for the Tweet-A-Long, and look for the hashtags!
