Episode 156 – A Winter Festive Holiday Party

ttv 1400 anniIn this weeks podcast, we celebrate the holiday season with our Christmahanakwanzika party, and you’re invited.

Also, we complete our review of the Audio Go / Big Finish series Destiny of the Doctor, this time with The Time Machine. We’ll give our impressions of this story, as well as an overall view of the series as a whole.

Plus, the moment is near. No, not that moment, the episode in which we say good by to Matt Smith as the Doctor. But first, we take a look back over the era and make our picks for the most definitive story to define the 11th Doctor.

And, a look at the news of the week including some convention announcements.

And of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Silence Will Fall When The Schedule Is Posted

While the rest of Whoville catches their collective breaths after the 50th, here at Traveling The Vortex, we still have miles to go before we sleep.

First up is a surprise addition to the schedule, our impromptu “Who With Friends” will be doing “The Three Doctors” sometime this week, keep an eye on @VortexKeith twitter feed for details.

Officially, if you’re not all tuckered out from Thanksgiving turkey and Black Friday shopping, Friday Night Who on 11/29 will be “The Five Doctors (Special Edition)”.

Our show this week (TTV #153) covers the audio goodness of Big Finish with a detailed look at “The Light At The End”.

Join us in sending all our love to long ago.  William Hartnell’s swan song “The Tenth Planet” is Friday Night Who 12/6.

That sets up TTV #154 to be Cybermen Archive IV, as we review “The Tenth Planet”, and Big Finish #34 “Spare Parts”.

FNW 12/13 brings us Christopher Eccelston in “The Long Game”.

Which sets up TTV #155 where we’ll cover the ending of IDW Prisoners Of Time comic with a look at issues 11 and 12.  And since December is our month to celebrate the 11th Doctor… (or is it twelfth now? HA! Traveling The Vortex had it right all along!) we’ll discuss Doctor Who Revisited: the 11th Doctor.

Just prior to Christmas, on 12/20 Friday Night Who celebrates with “The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe”.

We continue our 11th Doctor celebrations in TTV #156 with a look at Big Finish “Destiny Of The Doctor: The Time Machine”, and our retrospective 50th Anniversary Discussion over the 11th Doctor Era.

Friday Night Who heralds the arrival of Peter Capaldi on 12/27 with “The Fires Of Pompeii”.

And we round out the year with TTV #157 and our discussion of the 2013 Xmas Special, which if I know Moffat (and I do kids, oh yes, I do) will be called “Silent Night”.

And that brings us up to 2014, and our (gulp) third year of the podcast.  As always we thank you, our listeners and fans for keeping us around, keeping us honest, keeping us humble… and sharing the love.

Goodnight everybody!

.

.

.

.

What?  You want a hint of next year?  Really?  Do I have to keep doing that sneak peak thing?  I mean it was cute and clever a few times, but you really want more?  (sigh) Okay, okay.  January is still in a state of temporal flux while DVD release dates are hammered out, but you might want to make sure a certain trilogy is in your catalogue, least you be left in E-Space…

Schedule X

No, that’s not an X, but a Roman Numeral 10, as our schedule gets into the Tenth Doctor celebration month.

This wee’s show (TTV #147) is the wrap up of number 9, as we discuss Doctor Who Revisited 9 and have our 50th Anniversary Discussion of the the 9th Doctor Era. (Still time to vote in the poll!)

Friday Night Who on 10/25 showcases the return of our mascot, the Myrka in “Warriors Of The Deep” with Doctor No. 5, Peter Davison.

We’ll actually start our 10th Doctor celebrations a week early in TTV #148, as we’ll have Glenn (and if all goes well all three of us) reviewing the 10th Doctor book Forever Autumn by Mark Morris, and the Audio Go, Big Finish “Destiny Of The Doctor: Death’s Deal”

FNW 11/1 is the recently released “Terror Of The Zygons” staring Tom Baker for countdown spot No. 4.

And then TTV #149 will have our reviews of “Terror Of The Zygons” and IDW Comic’s “Prisoners Of Time 10”.

We reach number three on the countdown for Friday Night Who on 11/8 with Jon Pertwee in “The Daemons”.

We’ll cover “The Daemons” in episode #150… and holly cow, that’s a nice even number, so it’s time for another EPIVERSARY!

I know you’re all excited to hear our thoughts on the just recovered Troughton episodes, but it’ll have to wait just a bit longer. (Trust us, the suspense is killing us as well.) 11/15 Friday Night Who is “The Dominators”.

TTV #151 has us return to the 10th Doctor celebrations as we look at Doctor Who Revisited 10, and have our 50th Anniversary Discussion over the 10th Doctor Era.

Coming in at number one on the countdown (chronologically speaking), Friday Night Who on 11/22 takes us back to where it all began with “An Unearthly Child”.

And then the big one, #SaveTheDay for TTV #152 and our look at “The Day Of The Doctor (50th Anniversary Special)”

Assuming we are have not won the lottery and are not at Chicago Tardis this year, FNW on 11/29 will be the just released “The Tenth Planet”

And an announcement to cheer up Keith over the impending loss of Matt Smith, TTV #153 will be our Cybermen Archive IV! Covering “The Tenth Planet”, and at long last, Big Finish #34 “Spare Parts”.

That takes us right up to December when we’ll begin our celebrations (or morning) of the Eleventh Doctor era.  Stay tuned, true believer!

Schedule Update

We were unaware when we were scheduling that IDW “Prisoners of Time 9” does not release until 10/2 so to give everyone a chance to buy a copy and read the comic we are pushing our review off a week. The schedule below is updated to reflect that. Changes will be in bold.

October is here, (or it soon will be) so it’s time to start our celebration of the Ninth Doctor era!  We kick things off on 9/27 with Friday Night Who and the just released, animated, alternate ninth doctor Richard E. Grant in “Scream Of The Shalka”.

Traveling The Vortex comes to you a bit late for episode #144, and we’ll discuss Shaun’s trip (we’ll indulge him a bit, but not much), and the Big Finish/Audio Go “Destiny Of The Doctor: Night Of The Whisper”.

On 10/4 if you missed it during Daphne Ashbrook’s great re-watch, you get another chance as we do “Doctor Who: The Movie” as Friday Night Who continues to countdown the Doctors.

TTV #145 brings us our thoughts on  the IDW “Prisoners Of Time 9”, and we’ll step back to the 6th Doctor and Evelyn in Big Finish #23 “Project: Twilight”.

A light of another kind illuminates Friday Night Who on 10/11, “Ghost Light” is our 7th Doctor offering for the countdown.

A double dose of seven for TTV #146 as we review “Ghost Light” and Big Finish #12 “The Fires Of Vulcan.

Number six on the countdown for FNW 10/18 is “Vengeance On Varos”.

TTV #147 is all about our 50th Anniversary Discussion of The 9th Doctor Era & the Doctor Who Revisited: The 9th Doctor.

And Friday Night Who on 10/25 features our mascot, the mighty Myrka.  Oh yes, “Warriors Of The Deep” made the countdown.

And going forward?  Let’s just say we’re celebrating Halloween a day late but it will be filled with Terror…

In space no one can hear you schedule

Sorry for the delay in getting the update out to you, faithful listener, but between New Series Who, 50th Anniversary plans, AND Planet Comicon our new scheduling robot the WHO-9000 has been thrown for quite the loop.  I think we’ve got him reprogramed now, so here’s some upcoming goodies.  (Remember, to make things easy on you with so much going on, the majority of Friday Night Who that is coming up are episodes we’ve already reviewed/watched.)

Our show recording tonight is #120, and we kick off our celebration of the third Doctor era by covering the IDW comic “Prisoners Of Time 3”, as well as have our reviews of BOTH “The Rings Of Akhaten”, and “The Cold War”.

Friday Night Who on 4/19 celebrates third Doctor Jon Pertwee in “The Time Warrior”.

On 4/26 we journey back to the first Doctor William Hartnell and the first TARDIS bound episode, “The Edge Of Destruction” for FNW.

We can’t wait for this week, as TTV #122 includes our  50th Anniversary Discussion of the  3rd Doctor Era, and our reviews of  “Journey To The Centre Of The TARDIS”.

A special treat for @WhovianMich’s birthday on Friday Night Who of 5/3, we’ll be watching her favorite fifth Doctor Peter Davison episode “Enlightenment”.

May starts our celebration of the fourth Doctor, starting with IDW’s Prisoners Of Time 4, and our thoughts on new series’ “The Crimson Horror”.

Some new material hits Friday Night Who on 5/10, with Tom Baker in “Revenge Of The Cybermen”

And then TTV #124 is our Cyberman Archive III with “Revenge Of The Cybermen” and Neil Gaimen’s “Nightmare in Silver” (formerly “The Last Cyberman”).

That should bring us right up to the finale of season 7, and as always, Grand Moff Steven is being tight lipped about it so we’ll wait to schedule that when we know just a bit more than we do now.  Check out our facebook page for the third Doctor poll, and vote on what YOU think is the most iconic episode of his era (that we’ve reviewed).

Now, WHO-9000, can you open the pod bay doors please?

Episode 117 – The Second Doctor In Review

NEW_TTV_LOGO_200After a slight delay, this week’s show is now on the feeds. In this episode, we get a little long winded and discuss the Second Doctor’s era. This is our 50th anniversary retrospective on the Patrick Troughton era, and Second Doctor materials, starting with a trip to the Land of Fiction in The Mind Robber.

Then, Frazer Hines takes the reins and a turn as the Doctor, sort of, with the Big Finish and AudioGO adventure Doctor Who – Shadow of Death.

And finally we wrap up the review portion with the second story in the IDW comic series Doctor Who – Prisoner of Time.

Sorry, this is a long one this week.

Then a look back at the entire run of the Second Doctor, including our picks for the story that best represents the Second Doctor.

Also, a look at some of the news of the week.

And, of course, your feedback.

Series Seven Part 2 Scheduling Part 1

Ah. That time of year when you can smell New Who on the air like the coming of Spring, and all my scheduling work goes out the window and has to be cobbled together last minute to take those new episodes into account.  Oh well.

Tonight’s Friday Night Who (3/22) is part of our monthly celebration of the second Doctor, “The Mind Robber”.

Episode #117 of Traveling The Vortex is all things second Doctor, and will include our reviews of “The Mind Robber”, IDW’s comic “Prisoners Of Time 2”, Big Finish: Destiny Of The Doctor 2: Shadows Of Death, our look back over the 2nd Doctor Era for our 50th Anniversary Discussion, and, if Keith gets it read in time, his review of the book “The Moonbase”

Friday Night Who on 3/29 gears us up for the new season by revisiting Matt Smith in “The Impossible Astronaut” and “Day Of The Moon”…

…which leaves TTV #118 reserved to devote our full attention to “The Bells Of St. John”.

On 4/5 FNW revisits “Doctor Who: The Movie” in celebration of Daphne Ashbrook coming to Planet Comicon that weekend.

Look for updates all weekend long, (and maybe a few special exclusives too,) but we’ll give you the full scoop on Planet Comicon 2013 in episode #119, as well as start the month of April with our celebration of Jon Pertwee’s third Doctor by reviewing IDW Comic’s “Prisoners Of Time 3”.

FNW 4/12 is “The Waters Of Mars” with tenth Doctor David Tennant.

Because of the hugeness of Planet Comicon, you may have noticed we didn’t review the new episode of Who last week.  Well fret not, because you’ll get a two-fer in Traveling The Vortex #120, covering both “The Rings Of Akhaten”, and “The Cold War”.

and the plot thickens…

Schedules, Schedules, Get Your Schedules Here!

We’ve tweaked the upcoming schedule a bit to line up better with our 50th Anniversary plans, so for those of you following along at home, here’s an update for the next month or so…

The first week of March (3/1) we’ll finish “The Reign Of Terror” (parts 4-6) on Friday Night Who.

Traveling The Vortex #114 is our First Doctor retrospective.  We’ll discuss “The Reign Of Terror”, give our thoughts on the values of these and other animated episodes, as well as cover the first Doctor era (that we’ve reviewed to date).

Friday Night Who on 3/8 is “The King’s Demons” with fifth Doctor Peter Davison.

TTV #115 covers our reviews of “The King’s Demons” and Big Finish #26 “Primeval”.

Come celebrate my birthday on 3/15 with Tom Baker in “The Ark In Space”.

Traveling The Vortex #116 will have our reviews of “The Ark In Space” and our first foray into the Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures; #1 “Destination: Nerva”.

On 3/22 our Friday Night Who will be the 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton in “The Mind Robber”.

And episode #117 will be our Second Doctor retrospective, and have our reviews of the “The Mind Robber” as well as IDW’s comic “Prisoners Of Time” issue 2, and Big Finish’s Shadow of Death (Destiny Of The Doctor 2).

That rams us right up against the new series starting.

(SPOILERS AHEAD) I’m still fleshing things out from that point on, but if the scuttlebutt is to be believed, the first episode of the return of series seven deals with ghosts.  I’d love to pair up the seventh Doctor adventure “Ghost Light” with that one, but we’ll wait and see if things get a bit more nailed down in the coming weeks.
