Doctor Who Adventure Calendar Day 3

The Doctor Who Adventure Calendar will not be limiting it’s self to Christmas special teases. Today’s content is an interview with Steven Moffat on the Daleks.

From the website: “To celebrate the Doctor’s oldest alien adversaries we’re beginning a short series of videos which feature Doctor Who’s lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, discussing their history. He selects a number of stories that are amongst his favourites and the most significant Dalek adventures, beginning, appropriately enough, with the Daleks’ debut from December, 1963.

He reviews stories stretching right back to the First Doctor era.”

Episode 88 – Daleks In Disguise

It’s finally here! The return of Doctor Who to our televisions. But first, we get one more Dalek story out of the way. This week, our review of Day of the Daleks featuring The Third Doctor and Jo Grant.

Then, the episode we’ve all been waiting for. Our thoughts on Series Seven, Episode One, Asylum of the Daleks, with The Eleventh Doctor and the Ponds. Warning there are spoilers in this review, so if you haven’t watched the episode yet, beware.

Also, a look at this week’s news…wait what news? DOCTOR WHO IS BACK ON!

And of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Friday Night Who 7/20/12

What is Friday Night Who?

Well, as an impromptu tradition that started accidentally, we watched a Doctor Who episode late one Friday night back in April of last year.  I commented to Glenn that it felt like the old days, when we used to watch Who on KCPT (one of our local public television affiliates that used to show omnibus editions of Doctor Who).  We decided to revive the tradition with a modern twist.  In addition to watching the episode, we’d tweet-a-long to it with other Whovians on Twitter.  And so, Friday Night Who was born.  It’s a fun way to share moments, thoughts and experiences with the Doctor, and make some new friends to boot.

Tonight is Jon Pertwee in Death To The Daleks, which was just released on DVD in North America last week. Join @vortexglenn, @vortexshaun, @VortexKeith and @travelvortex on twitter for the live commentary, and look for the #FridayNightWho and #DeathToTheDaleks hashtags. We push play at midnight, CDT!

Vortex Event Horizons: The Doctor and Donna and Daleks, Oh My!

Coming up on the Vortex horizon…

Three weeks of Daleks coming up on Friday Night Who! This week’s post Thanksgiving slot (11/25 will be the 5th Doctor entry,”Resurrection Of The Daleks” (especially apt since this week also marks Chicago Tardis, staring none other than Peter Davison.  The following week 12/2 is 6th Doctor Colin Baker’s outing “Revelation Of The Daleks”.  And that means the masterpiece “Remembrance Of The Daleks” starring 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy is on 12/9.

On the show front, next week’s episode #48 has us hitting the highlights of Chicago Tardis (still time to let us know if you are going and would like to act as a correspondent!) and reviews of fourth season episodes “The Doctor’s Daughter” and “The Unicorn And The Wasp”.  Number 49 contains our reviews of “Midnight” and “Turn Left”, along with a recap of two we’ve already done, the River Song introductory stories “Silence In The Library” and “Forrest Of The Dead”.  We figured it was important for Donna’s character development for Keith to revisit these in order, not to mention we can hunt for all the hidden nuggets Moffat was sure to have planted early for River.  And the BIG 5-0 episode is an Adversary Archive on the Daleks (and a certain megalomaniac) as we go back and cover the Friday Night Who’s of the last three weeks.

After that, we set up our exit strategy for season four and the end of the year.  Expect some holiday cheer, Paul McGann and our first BIG FINISH reviews!

Keith & Shaun’s Doctor Who Shrine

As Chrissy pointed out we spent a lot of time in episode 42 of Traveling the Vortex talking about the new Doctor Who acquisitions and we should post pictures of them. Well as we promised in Episode 43 here they are! First up is the entire “shrine”

We also have a nice collection of Doctors with a TARDIS bank

And how can you have Doctors without their adversaries?

Then the adorable Character Building Mini Figures Cybermen and Amy Pond.

And to wrap up this long post pictures of the new action figure additions (Silence, 11th Doctor with Stetson, and Nephew) and a picture that I got while in Omaha for Contagion Outbreak.

Loose Threads: Around The Vortex

Welcome to “Loose Threads”, where like the 4th Doctor’s scarf, I hope to combine bits of factoidal information to present a fun if chaotic picture of the Whoniverse at any given moment.

50th Anniversary Plans, Big Finish Comes To Gally and The Waters Of Mars

* TV line talks with Stephen Moffat about the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who in 2013, and he promises emphatically, “it will be huge”.  Moffat wouldn’t be pinned down on weather the anniversary extravaganza would involve stand alone specials, an extra memorable season or other fun stuff.  “It won’t be just one thing…. We’ll be doing lots of stuff,” is all Moffat would concede.  “The plans are quite extensive and changing all the time.  Oh my God, we will hit that year very, very hard indeed.”  The BBC execs “are full committed” to his vision.  “There’s lot of decisions we’re making that are about making all that possible.  It’ll be amazing.”

With all the talk of a multi Doctor story featuring some or all of the combinations—Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Eccelston and David Tennant—reuniting, is it true?  And might other familiar faces from the past return as well?  “Possibly…. It’s so far in the future, it’s only a set of notions,” Moffat replies, adding that he’s still got this year’s Christmas special to focus on before he gets to locking in plans for the big 50.

* GallifreyOne just updated their guest list for next year.  The list now includes a quartet of Big Finish folk: Nicholas Briggs, executive producer for Big Finish Productions as well as the voice of the Daleks for the past six years; Barnaby Edwards the principal Dalek operator, director, actor, and writer for Big Finish; Beth Chalmers, new 7th Doctor companion Raine Creevey; and Lisa Greenwood, 6th Doctor companion Philippa “Flip” Jackson.  Also on the guest list are new series directors Toby Haynes and Richard Senior, between the two of them responsible for some of the more impresive Matt Smith episodes, including; “The Impossible Astronaut”, “Day Of The Moon”, “The Pandorica Opens”, “The Big Bang”, “Time”, “Space” and the upcoming “Let’s Kill Hitler”.

And working on a full house for the 1996 TV Movie reunion (Paul McGann, Daphne Ashbrook and Yee Jee Tso are already signed to appear), Philip Segal, executive producer of the TV Movie and the man who championed to get Doctor Who back on the air.  It is the 15th anniversary of the Movie, is it possible that The Master himself, Eric Roberts could be making an appearance?  Stay tuned…

* And finally in a bit of science reality, NASA has announced the Reconnaissance Orbiter has discovered evidence of flowing water on Mars.  Water on Mars is no news and has been reported on before of course, but flowing water on the surface is a big deal.  Just ask the Doctor, he could tell you.  For the full report, click here. <>

Episode 28 – Poor Fuel Economy Hybrids

This week’s episode is a review of the Tenth Doctor stories, Daleks in Manhattan, Evolution of the Daleks, and The Lazarus Experiment.

Also, Torchwood: Miracle Day impressions from Keith, a Gallifrey 23 update, and Doctor Who cast at San Diego Comic Con.

And, of course, your feedback.
