Side Trip 25 – Book Review: Prisoner of the Daleks

ttv_logo_newShaun and Glenn take some time to review the Goodreads Traveling the Vortex Book Club selection for October, Doctor Who: Prisoner of the Daleks (Doctor Who: New Series Adventures #33) by Trevor Baxendale.

This is the way we will continue to feature the book club titles, so as not to spoiler listeners who have not had a chance to read the novels.

Enjoy!

Episode 290 – A Kitschy Sixties Romp

ttv_logo_newIn this week’s show we jump into a parallel universe where the good Doctor is an Earthbound scientist, tinkering with his time machine in his back yard with the non-canonical “Dr. Who And The Daleks”. We finally get around to seeing this alternative version of Terry Nation’s Daleks story.

Also, no news this week, but we have plenty of stuff to talk about with Shaun refreshed from a journey to the great state of Colorado.

And, of course, there’s feedback!

The 12th Doctor story Robot Of Sherwood and the Titan Comics we originally had scheduled to review have been postponed for a bit, instead for Friday Night Who on 7/15 is the non-cannonical, alternate universe, cringe at the spelling but still fun “Dr. Who And The Daleks” starring Peter Cushing. This one may be hard to find for some people, so head over to our Amazon link NOW and get yours ordered. It’s available in a two pack which is great, you’ll see why in a minute…

TTV #290 will have our thoughts on “Dr. Who And The Daleks”.

7/22 happens to be the exact 50th Anniversary of the second non-cannonical, alternate universe, cringe at the spelling but still fun “Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.” with Peter Cushing, so what better way to celebrate than to watch the film for this week’s Friday Night Who? Aren’t you glad you headed over to our Amazon link when you did to get that two pack we talked about a minute ago?

Cybermen and dueling Matt Smiths are on the docket for Friday Night Who on 8/12 in the Neil Gaimon penned, “Nightmare In Silver”.

TTV #294 is our look into the acting prowess of the 11th Doctor, It’s Beyond The Doctor: Matt Smith edition. The film is still up for debate, but I’m pushing for Pride & Prejudice & Zombies… We’ll let you know as soon as that one is finalized.

FNW 8/19 is another new series episode with David Tennant in “Gridlock”…

…which sets up an Adversary Archive for The Macra in TTV #295. But we’ll be pulling double duty with this episode, also looking at the Lost In Time story “The Macra Terror”. Sadly NONE of the episodes of this 2nd Doctor tale still exist, so we’ll be reviewing it via the Target Novelization and the Audio Recon from the folks at Loose Cannons.

Beyond that? Top Con and Time Eddy loom on the horizon, along with a certain epiversary. Stay tuned, true believers!

New Companion Revealed!

Not only did the BBC announce Pearl Mackie is joining the show as Bill, we got a new trailer/clip of her in action! Check it out below:

They also sent out a press release which you can read below and more pictures!capaldi-Pearl-Mackie-series-10

BBC One today announced Pearl Mackie will join the Doctor Who cast as The Doctor’s new companion. Pearl was exclusively revealed to audiences on BBC One during half time the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday 23rd August.

On joining the cast in her first major television role, Pearl said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It’s such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn’t be prouder to call the TARDIS my home!

“Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can’t wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space. Reading the script at the audition I thought Bill was wicked. Fantastically written, cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in — I can’t wait to bring her to life, and to see how she develops through the series.

“I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can’t wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!”

“Shooting the trailer was absolutely mental, there were pyro technics and smoke and I met my first Dalek! I’m not sure it will ever become ‘the norm’ seeing crazy monsters on set, but I cannot wait to meet some more! The weirder the better, bring it on!”

Peter Capaldi said: “It is a genuine delight to welcome Pearl Mackie to Doctor Who. A fine, fine actress with a wonderful zest and charm, she’s a refreshing addition to the TARDIS and will bring a universe of exciting new possibilities to The Doctor’s adventures.”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer adds: “A new face in the TARDIS, a new voyage about to begin: welcome aboard the amazing Pearl Mackie! This is where the story really starts.”

Charlotte Moore, Acting Director of Television said: “It’s so exciting to be revealing the much anticipated new companion to the nation in such spectacular style. Pearl brings a wonderful energy and lights up the screen. She will captivate Doctor Who fans old and new across the globe.”

Brian Minchin, Executive Producer adds: “We’re utterly thrilled to have the hugely talented Pearl join Doctor Who and I can’t wait to begin her new adventures in time and space!”

Episode 263 – Batteries Not Included

ttv_logo_newIn this week’s show we say goodbye to Ian and Barbara as they leave the TARDIS crew, but we welcome the Doctor’s next traveling companion Steven. But, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. First we review Ian and Barbara’s final adventure as they flee with the Doctor and Vicki from the Daleks, landing at several locations in the Terry Nation penned story, The Chase.

We also take this opportunity to deliver another Adversary Archive edition of the podcast, this time featuring the Mechanoids. We explore The World That Waits which was printed in the Dalek Annual, ‘The Dalek World’, printed in 1965. Then we look two comic stories printed in the pages of ‘TV Century 21’ with Eve of War and Impasse. Then we round out the archive with a newer story from the pages of ‘Doctor Who Files 11: The Cult of Skaro’ with a story called Birth of a Legend.

Episode 227 – Age of Davros

TTV-Logo-1400-150x150**UPDATE** Apologies go out to Time Lord Ben. We accidentally omitted his feedback that should have followed his tip of the week. That has been corrected and the file reposted.

In this week’s show we flip last week’s topic on its ear and discuss the question: Is Davros better of without the Daleks?

We try to answer that by exploring what we know of the creator of the Daleks.

But leading into that discussion, we review the Big Finish Productions story, Davros, produced during the 40th anniversary year of Doctor Who. We’ll give our impression of that story.

And, per usual, we’ll discuss some news of the week, but not before we provide our reviews of the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the recently released, Avengers: Age of Ultron. We should warn you however, we get into some HEAVY SPOILERS about the film. So, if you have yet to see it, you may want to skip ahead in the podcast to about the 41 or 42 minute mark.

Plus, another Doctor Who: Legacy – Tip of the Week.

And, of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Episode 226 – The Davros Factor

TTV-Logo-1400-150x150In this week’s show straight off the heals of a re-watch of the classic story, Genesis of the Daleks, we discuss everybody’s favorite megalomaniac, Davros and determine if the Daleks are better without their ruthless creator. We’ll explore the Dalek history and determine if Davros has been helpful to their cause or a hindrance.

Also, some news out this week in the Whoniverse.

Plus another Doctor Who: Legacy – Tip of the Week.

And of course, you feedback.

Enjoy!

Episode 216 – War is Upon Us

TTV-Logo-1400-150x150In this week’s show it’s just Keith and Glenn. Shaun is still enjoying the Gallifrey One Doctor Who convention and will return with Mel next week. So, as has become a tradition with us, we are doing a book review this week. This time it’s an outing with the War Doctor and his new companion, Cinder in the novel Engines of War. Keith an I give our impression on this novel by George Mann and published by BBC Doctor Who Books.

Also, some news of the week, including some exciting news out of Big Finish productions.

And of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Friday Night Who 8/29

Friday Night Who continues along with Series 8, and since the second episode of the season is called “Into The Dalek” we figured it would be fitting to do a Dalek story this week, and since we recently did “Resurrection of the Daleks” it makes sense to do Colin’s installment “Revelation of the Daleks” series.

Revelation of the Daleks

Join @TravelVortex@VortexShaun@VortexKeith & @VortexGlenn as we press play at Midnight CDT.

And as always keep an eye #FridayNightWho & #RevelationoftheDaleks
