Scheduling The Return of Podcast Mysterio

Well, we’re done with our hiatus. We’re back, we’re tan, and we’re raring to go. Without further ado, here’s a look at what’s coming up in the vortex…

Our soon-to-be-released episode #441 will conclude our look at Big Finish “The Legacy of Time” with episodes 4.1 “Relative Time”, 5.1 “The Avenues of Possibility”, and 6.1 “Collision Course”.

Returning to a fun theme from the 50th anniversary, we go BEYOND THE DOCTOR, but with a twist as we are coming up on spooky time. So we’re focusing on all horror/thriller and suspense films starring your favorite actors.

(We are trying to locate Midnight at Madame Tussaud’s (also known as Midnight at the Wax Museum in the states) for William Hartnell, but as of yet cannot find a copy.

Moving into November, we get a book review of “The Pirate Planet” by Douglas Adams and James Goss for TTV #448.

More Torchwood in TTV #449 with Titan Comics Torchwood Vol. 3, and Big Finish Torchwood “Forgotten Lives”.

and speaking of Big Finish, we continue our celebration of their 20th anniversary by starting Gallifrey with series 1 “Weapon of Choice” and “Square One” in TTV #450

Gallifrey continues in TTV #451, with “The Inquiry” and “A Blind Eye”.

And that takes us all the way into December with our look back at The Macra Terror, (Now with Animation!) for TTV #452.

As always, the schedule is subject to change, but we’ll keep you in the loop if it does.

Pride And Prejudice And Scheduling

Updates and changes galore for your newest home edition of Traveling The Vortex, and a few surprises as well!

Friday Night Who on 7/8 is “Spearhead From Space”.

TTV #289 is All 8th Doctor, as we cover Big Finish 8th Doctor Adventures Season 2: #3 “Brave New Town” and #4 “The Skull Of Sobek”, along with the delayed Titan Comics 8th Doctor mini series #1-5.

The 12th Doctor story Robot Of Sherwood and the Titan Comics we originally had scheduled to review have been postponed for a bit, instead for Friday Night Who on 7/15 is the non-cannonical, alternate universe, cringe at the spelling but still fun “Dr. Who And The Daleks” starring Peter Cushing. This one may be hard to find for some people, so head over to our Amazon link NOW and get yours ordered. It’s available in a two pack which is great, you’ll see why in a minute…

TTV #290 will have our thoughts on “Dr. Who And The Daleks”.

7/22 happens to be the exact 50th Anniversary of the second non-cannonical, alternate universe, cringe at the spelling but still fun “Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.” with Peter Cushing, so what better way to celebrate than to watch the film for this week’s Friday Night Who? Aren’t you glad you headed over to our Amazon link when you did to get that two pack we talked about a minute ago?

You didn’t?

Well, better go take care of that now.  Go on, the link is right there. We’ll wait for you.

Okay, you’re back? Great! On we go…

TTV #291 will of course have our reviews of “Daleks Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D.”

FNW 7/29 is “The Greatest Show In The Galaxy”.

and it’s another book review for Traveling The Vortex episode #292. We’ll be taking a look at Candy Jar Books short story The Band Of Evil by Roger J Simonds & Shaun Russell and Lethbridge-Stewart: The Showstoppers by Jonathan Cooper.

FNW 8/5 is “Mindwarp”.

TTV #293 has some more Titan Comics reviews, these with the 11th Doctor (#2.6 – #2.10) and Big Finish #84 “The Nowhere Place”

Cybermen and dueling Matt Smiths are on the docket for Friday Night Who on 8/12 in the Neil Gaimon penned, “Nightmare In Silver”.

TTV #294 is our look into the acting prowess of the 11th Doctor, It’s Beyond The Doctor: Matt Smith edition. The film is still up for debate, but I’m pushing for Pride & Prejudice & Zombies… We’ll let you know as soon as that one is finalized.

FNW 8/19 is another new series episode with David Tennant in “Gridlock”…

…which sets up an Adversary Archive for The Macra in TTV #295. But we’ll be pulling double duty with this episode, also looking at the Lost In Time story “The Macra Terror”. Sadly NONE of the episodes of this 2nd Doctor tale still exist, so we’ll be reviewing it via the Target Novelization and the Audio Recon from the folks at Loose Cannons.

Beyond that? Top Con and Time Eddy loom on the horizon, along with a certain epiversary. Stay tuned, true believers!

Episode 285 – The Crazy Misadventures of the McLeod Family

ttv_logo_newHere we are at our 11th “Beyond the Doctor” episode, this time reviewing 10th Doctor actor, David Tennant in the wonderful BBC Films comedy, What We Did on Our Holiday. We step away from Doctor Who to talk a little bit about Tennant’s performance as Doug McLeod, and his dysfunctional family.

Also, we’ll talk a bit about an announcement by Peter Capaldi that is making waves, talking about the return of a certain companion actress. If you haven’t heard what he’s saying, you’ll have to listen to find out.

And Spoiler warning for those who haven’t seen X-Men; Apocalypse, we discuss some of the finer points of the plot.

Plus, a prize announcement for our raffle drawing winner, Mich.

And, of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Happy St. Scheduling Day!

You all know the patron saint of scheduling, right? Well she just came down from the calendar tower and bestowed the next few weeks upon us mere mortals. And because we like you. I mean, we really, really like you, we’re sharing with you…

Friday Night Who on 2/19 is a return to NuWho with “The Girl Who Died”

Traveling The Vortex episode #269 will have our experiences at the local Empower Comic Con, and our first TTV Book Club Review of the year with Doctor Who: The Legends of Ashildr (Doctor Who E-Books) by Justin Richards, James Goss, David Llewellyn, and Jenny Colgan.

FNW 2/26 is “The Girl In The Fireplace”.

TTV #270 is our review of the Lethbridge-Stewart short The Dogs Of War, our “Spoiler filled” Book Review: Lethbridge-Stewart: Mutually Assured Domination by Nick Walters, and a catch up of Titan Comics catch-up: 10th Doctor #11-15.

We’ll be watching the fifth Doctor Peter Davidson story “Frontios” on 3/4 for Friday Night Who.

and TTV #271 will have our review and discussion of “Frontios”.

FNW 3/11 is “The Hand Of Fear”.

Which should set us up nicely in TTV #272 for the TTV Book Club Review The Drosten’s Curse by A.L. Kennedy.

Friday Night Who on 3/18 once again, is “Day Of The Doctor”.

Which set us up nicely for TTV #273, our Beyond The Doctor: John Hurt. We’ll be watching 1984.

FNW 3/25 is “Terror Of The Vervoids”.

TTV #274 is Big Finish #68 Catch-1782, and more Titan Comics 12th Doctor #11-15.

Beyond that? More Beyond the Doctors, more book reviews, more Big Finish, and more being awesome. What more could you want?

Schedule Resolutions We Intend To Keep (…but may not)

  • UPDATE 1/4/16:

As we wind down 2015 and turn our eyes firmly forward to 2016, we present the upcoming schedule:

Friday Night Who on 1/1 is the swan song episode for Ian & Barbara. We’ll break “The Chase” into two weeks, parts 1-3 of the Hartnell episode are first

TTV #262 sees a return to Big Finish with mainline story #65 “The Juggernauts”, and we’ll offer up our opinions on the Titan Comics 9th Doctor mini-series event (issues #1-5)

FNW 1/8 concludes “The Chase” with parts 4-6.

  • And then we’ve expanded TTV #263 into a full blown Adversary Archive: The Mechanoids! We’ll review “The Chase”, (Goodbye, Ian and Barbara) cover some early Who comics with the stories The World That Waits (Comic – The Dalek World Annual), The Eye Of War & Impass (Comic – The Dalek Chronicles), and the short story Birth Of A Legend by Justin Richards (Doctor Who Files: The Cult Of Skaro).

Sylvester McCoy returns to FNW on 1/15 in “Delta And The Bannermen”.

TTV #264 sees the return of last year’s “Beyond The Doctor” feature. For Sylvester McCoy we’ll be discussing his turn in the 1979 Dracula staring Frank Langella.

We had a request for some “funky Pertwee”, so FNW 1/22 is “Claws Of Axos”.

Since we’ve already tackled that story, it frees up TTV #265 for some Candy Jar Books fun. We’ll talk the Lethbridge-Stewart Short The Cult Of The Grinning Man, have our “Spoiler filled” Book Review of Lethbridge-Stewart: Beast Of Fang Rock by Andy Frankham-Allen, and catch up with the 10th Doctor in Titan Comics #11-15 and we may have a special treat with a special guest on the show this week.

FNW 1/29 – is the animated “Scream Of The Shalka”.

TTV #266 starts season 2 of Big Finish 8th Doctor Adventures: #1 Dead London, #2 Max Warp

Been a while for one of our favs, FNW 2/5 is “Doctor Who: The Movie”.

TTV #267 sees us go “Beyond The Doctor” with 8th Doctor Paul McGann… AND 9th Doctor (Alternate) Richard E. Grant in Withnail & I.

This one could be a bit of a bother. We are launching a new series of discussions on Lost episodes, and starting with William Hartnell’s “The Crusade”. Obviously, with missing episodes, there will be some logistical challenges for Friday Night Who on 2/12, but we’re confident we can square that away. Or at the very least muddle through.

TTV #268 is the first in our “Lost In Time” discussions over “The Crusade”, the Reconstruction and Novelization.

After that? Well Gally looms for those who can go. Not sure on our end yet, but we are ever hopeful. And of course we’ll have our Book review over January’s Goodreads title, and a few other surprises…

Stay tuned, true believers! And thanks for all your support!

Episode 230 – All Topics Great and Small

TTV-Logo-1400-150x150In this week’s show we step away from Doctor Who briefly for a fifth installment of our “Beyond the Doctor” segment.

This time we delve into Fifth Doctor actor Peter Davison in the series, All Creatures Great and Small. We’ll give our impressions of the roll Davison played before his time on Doctor Who.

Also, a look at some news of the week, including more back and forth between current show runner Steven Moffat and former show runner Russell T. Davies.

Plus, we return this week with another Doctor Who: Legacy “Tip of the Week”

Oh, and of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Oh, What A Schedule. What A Lovely Schedule!

Once again sneaking this onto the feeds just before the wire. My apologies. Without further ado…

Our show this week will be covering the world of Titan Comics, we’ll take a look at the next batch of issues released since our last review, for Doctors 10, 11, and 12, as well as check into the just started 9th Doctor line, and the Free Comic Book day multi-story issue. What? You didn’t get one of the free comic book day issues? Well fret not, we have a few extra to give away on the show this week!

Friday Night Who on 5/15 is “The Deadly Assassin” with Tom Baker.

* Our show next week (TTV #229) takes us back to the Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures, with #5 and 6: “Trail Of The White Worm” and “The Oseidon Adventure”.

*EDIT – Filing this under the “this is why we can’t have nice things” category, I have corrected the titles of these Big Finish stories to read correctly, NOT as they were Trail Of The White Worm 1 & 2. Not sure what I was thinking or reading, my apologies for the confusion – Shaun

FNW on 5/22 is “The Visitation”.

Since we’ve already reviewed this week’s Friday Night Who selection, TTV #230 will be all about Peter Davison as we go Beyond The Doctor, and take a look at his performance in some episodes of All Creatures Great And Small.

FNW 5/29 is “The Happiness Patrol” with Sylvester McCoy.

TTV #231 is a Companion Archive on Bernice “Benny” Summerfield. We’ll tackle her in reviews of Big Finish #13 “Shadow of the Scourge”, and #42 “The Dark Flame”.

** EDIT (I had the number wrong on “Shadow Of The Scourge”, it is Big Finish main line story number 13, NOT #7. This has been corrected.) – Shaun

June brings us to ol’ sixie, so Friday Night Who on 6/5 is the first two parts of “The Two Doctors”.

Episode #232 of Traveling The Vortex goes Beyond The Doctor with Colin Baker, but we are still searching for just the right thing to showcase him in. Stand by for updates!

**EDIT Just decided! We will celebrate Colin Baker fresh off his recent appearance in the episode “The White Iris” of Star Trek Continues! Brand new and readily available to all, go here to view!

FNW 6/12 finishes off “The Two Doctors” with Part 3.

** TTV #233 is even more Big Finish, #45 “Project Lazarus”, and #57 “Arrangements For War”.

NOTE! “Project Lazarus” is a sequel to “Project Twilight” (#23) listeners MAY wish to refresh their memories of the previous adventure…

We’ll celebrate Father’s Day a little early this year on 6/19 with Christopher Eccleston in “Father’s Day” for Friday Night Who

Which will lead us into another one of those fun topics in TTV #234: Great Fathers in Doctor Who. Get your feedback in, we’ll be counting on you guys to help us flesh out the best fictional Dads in the vortex!

Rounding out the end of June for FNW on 6/26 is William Hartnell in “The Aztecs”.

And TTV #235 returns Paul McGann’s Big Finish 8th Doctor Adventures to the line up with #5 “Phobos” and #6 “No More Lies”.

Beyond that? Well Con Season starts back up for some of us, but we can let slip that we have something special planned with Lost Episode Re-Cons, and a book review or two on the horizon.

Post Gally Schedule

An update for the schedule for you guys!

The biggest local event of the year kicks off on Friday this week, and to celebrate Karen Gillan and Caitlin Blackwood coming to our neck of the woods our special Planet Comicon Friday Night Who on 3/13 is “The Eleventh Hour” (This marks an update from the previously scheduled “Sound Of Drums / Last Of The Time Lords” since John Barrowman had to cancel his appearance.)

We’ll bring you all the news and recaps of this year’s Planet Comicon in TTV episode #220.

To celebrate it’s “10th Anniversary” since airing, (though a couple of days early) our FNW offering on 3/20 is “Rose”.

FNW on 3/27 will be the first three parts of the Jon Pertwee story “The Mind Of Evil”.

And just sneaking in at the end of the month in TTV #222 is our 3rd Beyond The Doctor: Jon Pertwee. We’ll be reviewing his appearances in Worzel Gummidge, which appear to be wildly available on the youtubes.

FNW 4/3 we finish “The Mind Of Evil” Parts 4-6.

Its the return of everyone’s favorite villain in TTV #223 – Adversary Archive, The Master II, with looks at “The Mind Of Evil”, and Big Finish #49 “Master”.

Hope you got your season 8 DVDs, cause FNW on 4/10 is Capaldi’s intro, “Deep Breath”.

Which frees TTV #224 to return to Paul McGann in Big Finish 8th Doctor Adventures #3 “Horror Of Glam Rock”, and #4 “Immortal Beloved”.

Beyond that? More Daleks than you can shake a stick at! (and really, it wouldn’t do you much good, they’d just exterminate the stick) and Tom Baker’s Beyond the Doctor segment. There’s a hint if you add 2 plus 2…

Spring Into Our New Schedule

A bit late for my taste in trying to keep you all up to date, but here we go for the next batch of goodies!

For our last Friday Night Who of January (1/30) we’ll finish off  “The Sensorites” with parts 4-6.

Our show this week (TTV #214) covers “The Sensorites”, and Big Finish Audio mainline story #85 Red, (featuring Sylvester McCoy, NOT Peter Davison as I had previously insinuated. Oops.)

FNW on 2/6 is the fourth Doctor story “Underworld”.

TTV #215: We’ll review “Underworld” and Big Finish 4th Doctor Adventures #4: “Energy Of The Daleks”.

Con season officially starts this week, as Shaun will be traveling to Galifrey One in LA. FNW for 2/13 is the 50th anniversary story “Day Of The Doctor”

…which allows the boys left behind to do a book review over The Engines Of War in TTV #216. (Shaun may or may not be able to take part.)

FNW on 2/20 is “Boom Town”

and TTV #217 will have full reports from Shaun and Mel (and hopefully some surprises) over The 26 Seasons of Gallifrey One.

FNW 2/27 starts off the epic Patrick Troughton adventure “The Ice Warriors” with Parts 1-3.

Sneaking in right at the end of February in TTV #218 is our second “Beyond The Doctor” segment featuring Patrick Troughton.  We’ll be reviewing Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.

Friday Night Who on 3/6 finishes “The Ice Warriors” Part 4-6.

And then, TTV #219 is an Adversary Archive: The Ice Warriors 2! with our reviews of “The Ice Warriors” (now with animation), and Big Finish audio #8 Red Dawn.

The following week is Kansas City’s Planet Comicon! in celebration of con guest John Barrowman, we’ll watch “The Sound Of Drums / The Last Of The Time Lords” on 2/13  (but due to con obligations the boys themselves may be absent)

And our show #220 will bring you all the awesomeness that is Planet Comicon 2015.

Beyond that? Well, it might just be time to bone up on your knowledge of the Master and his evil mind…
