The Feedback Jingle (By Request)

Odd Duck Phil, I think it was, made a request a week or so ago in a part of his feedback that Shaun do the “Traveling the Vortex Feedback Jingle” complete with snaps, scat, and finishing with jazz hands. You really don’t get the full effect without seeing it, so without further ado…

Episode 83 – Mess With the Bull, You Get the Horns

In this week’s show a look at another Adversary Archive, this time The Nimon.

First the Fourth Doctor, Romana II and K-9 take on the Nimon in Horns of the Nimon. Then the Eighth Doctor and Charley face down the foe in the Big Finish audio play Seasons Of Fear.

Plus, a look at what’s going on in the news this week.

Also, we remember the beautiful and eloquent Mary Tamm who sadly passed away this past week.

And of course, your feedback. Enjoy!

Vincent and The Doctor…and Shaun

Returning from Holiday in Colorado, we stopped in Goodland, Kansas, home of the giant van Gogh painting.  Artist Cameron Cross is behind The Big Easel project, and the proposed goal is to paint reproductions of all seven van Gogh sunflower paintings and place one in each of seven countries with ties to either van Gogh, or sunflowers.  Current instillations are in Altona, Canada and Emerald, Australia as well as Goodland.

“Three Sunflowers In A Vase” was just recently refurbished (despite the picture WITHOUT Shaun’s help) because after 12 years in the harsh Kansas weather the painting needed a bit of a facelift, and it looks better than ever.

We think Vincent (and Amy) would be pleased.

Mary Tamm (1950-2012)

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mary Tamm who played Romana I alongside Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor in the Key to Time Season of Doctor Who. Mary had been engaged in a long battle with cancer. She was 62 years old.

Mary played Romana for only one season, but brought a beauty and elegance to the role of the Time Lady. She also portrayed Princess Strella in The Androids of Tara. Mary said that the character of Romana would not develop any further from its ‘traditional’ companion role and upon her departure, The Armageddon Factor’s guest actress Lalla Ward took over the character the following season.

We here at Traveling the Vortex would like to express our condolences to Mary Tamm’s family and loved ones. Our thoughts, prayers, and meditations go out to them at this time.

Episode 82 – We Built This Forbidden City On Rock ‘N’ Roll

In this week’s show we turn our attention on the Doctor’s greatest enemy for our fifth Adversary Archive featuring the Daleks.

In this episode we review the Third Doctor televised story, Death To The Daleks, and two Big Finish audio plays, The Apocalypse Element featuring the Sixth Doctor, and The Mutant Phase with the Fifth Doctor.

Also, a quick rundown of our busy weekend, our thoughts on the new Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, and the news of the week.

Oh, and of course, your feedback.

Enjoy!

Coming up on the Vortex… Friday Night Who on 7/27 features the fourth Doctor in “The Horns Of Nimon”

Our show that week #83 is a Nimon adversary archive, featuring our reviews of “The Horns Of Nimon” and Big Finish #30 “Seasons Of Fear”.

Starting in August the following week on FNW is fifth Doctor Peter Davison in “Time Flight”.

TTV #84 will include our reviews of “Time Flight” and Big Finish #10 “Winter For The Adept”.

Sixth Doctor Colin Baker returns to the FNW line up on 8/10 in “Timelash”.

Our reviews of the sixth Doctor adventures “Timelash”, and Big Finish #3 “Whispers Of Terror” make up our 85th episode of Traveling The Vortex.

And then in honor of Keith and Sarah’s wedding on the 18th of August, for our Friday Night Who the night before (8/17) we’ll watch Keith’s favorite episode, “Vincent And The Doctor”.

Keith will be gone on holiday–his honeymoon–the 19th through the 27th, so TTV #86 will just be Glenn and Shaun with a second set of Book Reviews: Glenn will review The Eight Doctors featuring the eighth Doctor by Terrance Dicks, while Shaun takes a stab at Amorality Tale by David Bishop featuring the third Doctor.

Beyond that we’re in a state of flux while we wait for an official start date for series seven (though we believe it to be on or about the 25th.)  We’ll play the next few weeks by ear until such time as a official release date comes down the pipe.

Friday Night Who 7/20/12

What is Friday Night Who?

Well, as an impromptu tradition that started accidentally, we watched a Doctor Who episode late one Friday night back in April of last year.  I commented to Glenn that it felt like the old days, when we used to watch Who on KCPT (one of our local public television affiliates that used to show omnibus editions of Doctor Who).  We decided to revive the tradition with a modern twist.  In addition to watching the episode, we’d tweet-a-long to it with other Whovians on Twitter.  And so, Friday Night Who was born.  It’s a fun way to share moments, thoughts and experiences with the Doctor, and make some new friends to boot.

Tonight is Jon Pertwee in Death To The Daleks, which was just released on DVD in North America last week. Join @vortexglenn, @vortexshaun, @VortexKeith and @travelvortex on twitter for the live commentary, and look for the #FridayNightWho and #DeathToTheDaleks hashtags. We push play at midnight, CDT!

Congratulations Phil And Terry!

As we’ve reported, friend of the show, good feed backer and constant listener “Odd Duck” Phil got married last week in Florida, and he was kind enough to send us a few pics of him and his new wife Terry.  From the Traveling The Vortex family to yours, Congratulations guys!

Episode 81 – The Croutons

Another episode hits the feed, this time we have a little fun with our review of the Second Doctor story, The Krotons. One of the final outings for Jamie, Zoe, and The Doctor, the Krotons was released in North America on DVD for the first time just this week.

Then a review of the Big Finish audio play The Land of the Dead, featuring the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa.

Also, San Diego Comic-Con was in the news this week with lot’s of Doctor Who presence throughout. A look at some of the panels that Team TARDIS members turned up on over the weekend.

And of course your feedback. Enjoy!
